    Where to start ?

I purchased a old farm with all kinds of scrap laying around. Going to start cleaning it up and scrapping a lot of it out . There is a lot of old zero turn lawn mowers from way back, a big mercruiser in board motor with prop. A big outdoor aircompressor , detroit diesel engine off of a travel bus that the neighbor said was running before they junked out the rest of the bus. Frames and heavy beams , old impliments , wheels rims some from small tractrors and some looks like big trucks. Heavy copper wires that must have came off of tractors ,small electric motors , and some heavy alu wires. Theres some brand new alum hubs with bearings in them and alot of them. Old engine block Just alot of different stuff and I do have a small backhoe to move the big items. There is even a International skidder with big forks on it and it runs it pivots in the middle and a huge bucket truck with a big post whole digger attachment on it and it does run also. I have called the local scrap buyer and he said they would drop off a big dumbster and come and get it when it is full, but I dont want to just trough it all in together because I do have the time to go through it .Any advise on how to get the most of what I have would be appreciated. Thanks

Sorry, for not taking the time to do the introduction and other polite things. I am a retired industrial Electrician, for a Automotive company used to program robots, PLC's and troubleshooting automation equipment. I bought a small farm in Southern Illinois and my wife ,4 kids and myself are always doing things together. I have a lot of scrap and the kids are all wanting to help ,so I was hoping to get the most for the kids . I have had all kinds of people wanting me to just load it all up and be done with it , but the way I operate always willing to work for everything and maybe start doing it as a hobby. I will post some pictures of the bigger items tomorrow . Thanks

thanks for telling us more about yourself. It sounds like a good family project. It sounds like you probably have plenty of tools, so why don't ya'll just start tearing into that stuff and break it down and sort it all out. Sounds like a heck of a lot of fun to me !!

No, thank you,,, lol Welcome to the forum. Take some time and do some reading, or you can search for specific items but most stuff has been covered.

If you have a trailer and some 5 gallon buckets just start dismantling and classifying. Start taking the non-ferrous off and putting it in their own buckets (copper, aluminum, brass, etc), and when you have all the good stuff off, put the remaining ferrous on the trailer. When the trailer is full, take it in, get your cash and start the process over again. When you are finished getting rid of all the iron, then start processing the non-ferrous (stripping insulated wire, etc). Once that is complete, take in all the processed non-ferrous stuff and get ready for a nice payday.

Thanks for the helpful advise , be putting pics of the bigger items on later today. Thanks again. Mike Oh will be doing a lot of reading tonight . One real quick question. What to do with all rims with rubber on them , most are small tractor and truck rims?

Check with your scrap but yards around here CHARGE YOU for taking them. Without the tires, they'd be #1 Iron.
People may laugh at me, but that's ok. I laugh all the way to the bank.

Your best bet might be to try and make friends with a shop that has a machine to mount and dismount tires. Maybe they will let you use it since you are providing the labor.
