catalytic converters

we was saving these up to get a 4x4 dodge cummins(used of course) later this year but we have to get our plasma cutter quick and its gonna take one nicer than what we were looking at. one of these i dont even know what it is im hoping its the bead type that i see you guys talk about its says ac on it and came off a chevy 1500 it doesent have any honeycomb in it its something else. anyway i know zito knows alot about these but he usually doesnt get on till later at night. i sent these pics to

4 came of a v8 mountaineer
1 ponitac sunfire
1 nissan pickup
2 izuzu rodeo
and just cant remember the other but it may have been a blazer but im not sure

Yeah that's a jumbo bead, pop a small hole in that plug (don't remove the plug, just poke a small hole in it using a hammer/screwdriver, or welder's chipping hammer etc) and see if it still has the beads inside or if it's empty. They'll look like small light beige/grey bb's. On the 2 outside ones in the bottom row (toyota on the lh, nissan on the rh), can you take pics of those from the side please? not the top but the side, showing the seam. Each of those cats has 2 versions, with the fatter ones being classed as high-grade imports instead of small imports. It's about an extra $7 per cat around here. Not much, but every bit helps. As a bonus, it's been my experience that showing the buyer you know something about them most definitely helps what your material gets graded as. I can't say if that's the case with the place you linked, but it can't hurt to look more knowledgeable.

Those 2 GM breadloafs in the middle of the middle row are the very short breadloafs, so they should get you Large GM/short loaf grading instead of just regular breadloaf. AutoCore has the short loafs on their pricelist, so that's good.

Ok, so if I were grading these, it would be;
top row LH to RH; AC 4 dot, low domestic, domestic pre X 2, low-grade import (or possibly large cast, would have to see it), and jumbo bead
middle row LH to RH; Lg GM X 2, Lg GM/small breadloaf X 2, low domestic
bottom row LH to RH; small import (again, could possibly be the high-grade import, which I'm guessing is what AutoCore calls the "toyota fat" on their list), low domestic X 2, small import (or again, possibly high grade import)

One thing I will say is to make sure yourself of exactly how full these cats are before you take them somewhere to sell. Grab an old antenna off one of your scrappers, and dip every end (other than the bead cats, of course). You can often see the honeycomb inside just by looking down the pipe with a bright flashlight, but it's easy to miss seeing that a cat is burnt down a 1/2 inch that way, or something similar. Depending on the buyer and the cat, that 1/2" might cost you a good chunk of $$. And again, it gets back to looking knowledgeable about what you have. If you show up to sell someone some cats, and 1/4 of them or more are empty, he's going to think you're either A) an idiot, or B) a scammer.

I've never sold cats before and haven't really read a lot about them but if the catalyst inside is mostly used up, do they not have any value? Or is it just a diminshed return type thing? I would hope that even if some was missing it would still hold some value.

Yes, you are paid on the amount of honeycomb material still inside the housing.

zito thanks so much, these are all intact, tho i dont know if they are full or not ill checkem tomorrow when i get off work, i have a couple busted up that i left in the shop that one day ill deliver in person. ill also turn those two on their side and take some pics thanks again so much

Just shake the jumbo bead to see if the beads are still in it.

i didnt get a chance to take the pics, got my tail kicked at work last night so was tired after my 12. the buyer sent me an offer of 1200 as long as they were all full and that sounded about right with all the domestics you quoted. i didnt pack them up either but ill get them out on monday. thanks again zito and everyone else, when i get the money ill let everyone know how i actually did.

Kris Kringle, this place is in dallas fortworth, we were saving till we had a 100+ like i said we was going to buy another truck, we was going to deliver that many in person, seeing how your in texas you dang right ill buy the beer. i dont know about averages but we got these 15 in exactly one month, the first two were the ones from the cadillac and the rest followed, so should be by the end of the year anyway. i like bud light and the bullet but thats just me but ill buy you whatever you want

Well just take the bead and shake it.If it sounds like it has alot of sand in it then it's full.If it doesnt have much then you may get a half for it.I hate them things lol.

Also i don't know what Zito is thinking but them 2 breadloafs are large breads not small ones.
Also the 4 off of the montaineer i would say are the 4 pres they are worth $20-$25 a piece.Not alot but with 4 on 1 vehicle they add up.

Seems like you are doing it right trying to save them up.So i take it you have nothing in them.I would like to do that but i pay so much per car i always have money in the wheels,cats and such.

i was wanting to save more but i really have no choice, yes pure profit, only on two cars have we went into our extras to have to make money, USUALLY on the body we clear from 50 up to 250. batteries, wheels, cats etc are pure profit. in reality i only have at the most 5 or 6 competitors down here for cars so i know and am grateful of the lucky situation we are in. we have emptied our stash several times now but this is the most we have ever sold at once. also in the morning we are probably breaking down our alum wheels i think we only have 9 and probably clean up our radiators

Nah you can see those are the shorty breadloafs. Compare them to that small toyota in the lower LH corner. The toyota cat is longer than those. Most definitely the shorties.
