question on whats good and whats not.

hi guys, there is 'spring clean up' in my area here soon, and i was wondering what items i should be on the look out more. for example. are dryers better than washers, are stoves better than fridges etc etc. i have limited space and i want to get what is more valuable. and i am kinda new at this so any help would be great. i know that some item have more 'hidden' copper than other but im not sure what to keep and what to pass on.

I don't know how much room you have but if were me I would take anything that has scrap value. If you don't have much room maybe e-waste would be better for you. In that case computers ar the most valuable. You could go around and clip the power cords off everything. Washers and dryers will have copper wires if you take the pannle behind the controls, they go down the back all the way to the motor. Pull the motor off, most have al. windings but you can sell the whole motor. Hope this helps a little.

Washers/dryers / stoves will bring the same price.Most buyers will require anything with a refigeration compressor to be removed or evacuated.The compressor from the fridge and the electric motors from the washer/dryer will be worth more.But dont try to remove the compressor unless you are a pro.It has a lot of pressure and can be dangerous.As for "hidden copper" there will be only the insulated copper present in the items you described.....other than the copper present in the electric motors and compressor unless they are aluminum wound.

Stoves and fridges bring me .11 cents a pound. Sometimes its not worth the aggravation of cutting all of the copper wires out of everything, but I do. I get .83 cents even for insulated wire. If you have a sheet metal shop in your area, have them make you a "homemade" wire splitter. Piece of sheet metal with a hole drilled-in for cord size, then they can weld a razor blade just right for splitting the wire open when you pull it through. There is a nice demonstration on youtube....Search "homemade wire splitter" -Good Luck!

i called the surrounding towns for the spring clean up dates and hope i can hit them up before other people.

Thanks for asking the question, I was just thinking about asking the same thing. I'm in the same situation here. The local clean up day is tomorrow, and they never order enough roll offs. They always end up making piles of scrap until they can get the dumpsters switched out. I have seen them let scrappers come in and grab a few items before. I too only have my pickup available, so I wanted to get the most $ per cubic foot.

Metal Dishwasher
Washing Machine
Dryer
Microwave
Gas BBQ
LCD TV
CRT TV
Fluorescent Lamp
Standing Fan
Aluminium Can

When I weighed out all the steel and boards in an LCD it totalled at least 20% higher than the copper and ali count ina CRT (although my size average for a CRT is only 20"). Plus there isn't a hulking great lead and glass tube to dispose of.

That is exactly what I was looking for. Thanks! I see that refrigerators didn't even make the list. Is this because of the freon hassle? Would the other say that their top ten list contains all the same items? I thought that Air Conditioners and Hot Water heaters were both good too.

Just about every LCD TV you see curbside that does not have a physically broken screen just needs a few capacitors replaced to get it working again. Its a common problem where the caps on the power supply board bulge or burst and it stops working. Less than 5 dollars worth of parts and a little time spent soldering to replace them and you now have a working TV you can keep for yourself or sell.

also don't forget your wire cutters .lots of vacuums get put out .also cable, sat boxes, laptops, computers. dvd players, lcd monitors
ac units and dehumidifyers ,screen doors(alum). this are items I find a lot

stove, washers. dryers. etc take up a lot of room for what they weigh.

a picky scrapper is a hungry scrapper, never drive by anything with scrap value, 90% of the time it won't be their on your way back.

CRT TV's are so hard to sell unless they are big screen......
