Is very important to do your math before picking up items from customers or craiglist.
You need to know if you going to make a decent profit or you going to loose money.

its common sense that the act of picking up the scrap should not cost more than youre going to make out of it.
and then its another whole different story when guys have this attitude:
"im sorry, my time is worth more than that"
when the truth is that the guy is just sitting on his fat arse doing nothing & he would at least earn something by going to pick up even small amounts.
the only time i will pick up something that not worth even the fuel it costs to go there, is when its from someone who regularly gives me stuff & they want something gone urgently.

At least you did not promise to get the metal and then back out, as you have stated in the past there are other scrappers out there it is ok to spread the "wealth" around LOL
Yeah I have contacted people that they say I'm waiting for this person but he or she is not coming and they ask me are you coming for sure. When I give my word I be there for sure. At the same time is a gamble because you never know if is a prank or someone serious. But that is a different story you got to go with your gut and common sense.
One time this guy was giving five computers and other other computer stuff and I said I want those items but will take me 20 minute to get there. He said come and get them. So I was prepare and send him another text saying don't give it to no one else and please text me back. I started driving and never heard from him after 7 minutes I turn around. Then after an hour he text me and asked me if I was coming. I went to craiglist and his post was flag for removal. So my guess was it was a prank. Lots of immature kids out there playing games.
Sometimes it is worth losing money on a deal for the PR and advertising. I am heading out this morning for a job that is an hour and a half away one way to pick up and cut three loads that will be hauled 40 miles. This will take me two days and net profit will be about zero. The benefit - this is an irrigation company that hires me to disassemble all of their units and the previous and future profits from this contact are well worth the sacrifice.
Give back more to this world than we take.
