Cool Cleaning Metal 101 - Educating New Scrappers & Giving True Scrappers a Laugh

I have a funny little story to tell when I first started to learn about scrapping. I remember very clearly calling my Metal Yard and asking them pricing. When they told me Steel was 10 cents a pound, but Clean Steel was more.... My heart skipped a beat. The thought of Cleaning all the metal we had scrapped was overwhelming to me until I realized what Clean Metal really is.

Therefore it has inspired me to make this video. Please enjoy the funny twist I put in to it!

When I first started cleaning aluminum, I would miss a screw or two and then have to take some of it back home to clean. Now they realize I don't do this on purpose and let some of my mistakes slide by. If you have a good yard it pays to be loyal to them.

if you can get some dry ice and stick it in that cylinder the sleeve will fall right out

Sometimes, the ones I have seen are cast into the block & won't slide out.
I put a new disc on my 9iunch grinder & run a cut the length of the block at both ends of the cylinder.
Then I use some wedges & sledgehammer & wedge out the slot untill the block cracks into half & the cylinders then fall out.

wow! eesa, that's determination man! I didn't really know about the sleeves, I thought they would been the pressed in kind. I heard the rig mechanic and a motorman on an offshore drilling rig talking about changing the sleeves out in one of those big EMD motors, and said that was the way to get em out of those ones.

I'll have to try that. I have a pile of boat motors I got at an auction awhile back and wasn't sure how I was going to get the sleeves out.

They said just put it in there, maybe throw something over the top, let it set awhile, and then tap on the sleeve, and it should ease right on out (dry ice there was readily available tho, it would be in the shipping containers with their frozen foods)

Usually buying a case of their favorite beer or liquor every now and then don't hurt either

yes indeed loyalty can pay off my yard local which is not the best of prices so I usually only do steel and so other things not worth hauling unlike copper to go an extra 40miles for prices but they have a slide out board for regulars that has a slight higher pricing and even 2cents can make a huge difference
