Jack Scrapper on Tungsten Carbide $14 a lb

A friend of mine brought in some carbide a month ago or so. At $9.00 a lb. I dont remember how much it weighed but came out to $2,844.00. Not bad for old machine parts / Heavy duty drill bits.

I scored about $2500-$2600 with some "slitting line knives" once

the size of a typical slitting set is shown in image knives were about 9 lbs each when they were sharpened to small to use.

9 lbs x 24 knives = 216 lbs x 12 = $2592.00

but that is just mathematical reasoning. so the claim that i sold a set for 2600 is not so far fetched.

I've got a fair bit stored up, do you mind me asking who your buyer is Jack? I've been trying to find somewhere in Canada to sell to.

DEVO, google scrap carbide buyers and I bet there will be 30 to 40 companies that come up. Find one and ship it to them just find a trusted buyer. You might have to send off a sample first then get the analysis back and a solid quote from them. Just a thought.

here is what you do call up local carbide insert suppliers because most of the the ones I met buy them themselves. you just call and say hey I have xxx lbs of carbide and i need a buyer. the distributors should hook you up or just buy them off of you no running around.

Piston, Why didn't I think of that??!!

I know there are tons of buyers, most of them in the USA, which involves extortion level shipping rates to get product there from Canada. And then there's shipping across a border as well. I was simply asking him for a referral, since we are in the same rough geographical area.

Sorry you took offence to someone exercising sound business practice and doing a little networking, in the future I'll do it privately.

Devo, buddy, I don't believe there was any offense intent there, just another useful and probably fruitful idea from a fellow forum friend. Same search, tweaked to your province would make it a more useful albeit, shorter list of results I figure. Just my two cents worth. how do you identify tungsten carbide? the info i have found said you can use a spark test. also read magnetism is a little weaker.
any other tricks to identify this metal?
