USPS has some flat rate padded envelopes that you can only get online from usps.com. I order 100 at a time and they work out great for items like floppy drives, cd/dvd drives etc and it only costs $ 5 and change to ship.
I dont think that a regular flat rate envelope will work.

I would be a little worried about sending any kind of drive in an envelope. When they do an "Ace Ventura" to your package there seem like a high chance of damage.Originally Posted by FourNines
Looks like 5055 learned a lesson the hard way. Figure out shipping PRIOR to selling. How can you quote someone a shipping price if you aren't sure how you are going to ship it?

padded flat rate envelope is $5.70. I think its a better way to go on 5" drives.

Phantom, yeah thanks for that, slight miscalculation on my end when I posted the price. Like you said, learning the hard way but at least I'm learning. Luckily the piece is for parts so I would think an envelope would work ok this time.

I have shipped tons of items with these envelopes. The are padded with bubble wrap on the interior. Heck, I have even shipped coffee mugs in them. Never a problem. I wouldnt ship something heavy that could possibly tear the envelope. Also, you can put the drive in a box and place the box inside the envelope. More than one way to skin a cat...

I think USPS is the best method on this one. Even with a USPS box, you most likely will come out ahead in that size. Anything bigger and I think FedEx comes ahead. The carriers really bumped up their charges this year. I think that was mentioned on this forum recently.

I use the Region A boxes with USPS when I sell these drives on Ebay. I had to order the Region A boxes through the mail and it took forever for them to deliver, but they are close to the size of a medium flat rate box and only cost $7-$9 to ship! Only problem is that I have only been able to ship them through Ebay and no one local to me carries the boxes so they are a pain in the butt to get...

you could always put a couple layers of bubble wrap around it and put it in a regular flat rate envelope, it seems to me that the padded envelope will accept larger objects though
