    RANT -Freight companies suck

Got screwed today for the 3rd time on the same shipment. Total lost hours (vacation, etc.) from my full time job -18, roughly equivalent to $1,000. I swear people don't want to work and companies have no ethics.1st day, 1st company claimed a bad address, they couldn't pick up a phone and get directions. They have been here before. Oh, and it was Friday before Labor day. Rescheduled for the following Tuesday between 12 and 2. Didn't get a phone call. They filled the trailer and went back to the terminal. I had to call to find out.
Today was a different company. At 1130, they said pickup between 12 and 230. At 4, they were at least 1.5 hours away and wouldn't be there until after 6. Sorry, I have a family and a life.
    These guys suck!

I usually drop mine off at terminal....not sure if this is option for you to pick up and drop off at terminal might save time and frustration

It is, but now we are talking at least an hour drive each way. Having a commercial address and fork lift was supposed to make things easier and cheaper.

I am sorry this happened. I have called and complained to the dispatcher and she apologized but that and a dollar will get you a coffee at McDonalds. I have had plenty of times when I scheduled pickups and didnt show one day but 99 times out of 100 they were always there the 2nd day. I have only 1 recourse and that is to stop using that carrier in your area. You are correct having a commercial address with a forklift is the optimal situation for the best pricing and dropping off at terminal also gets good pricing. I apologize again but has most of us that do shipping are at the mercy of the carriers.

This was not meant to reflect on you, but on the actual frieght companies and the work ethic of much of today's work force.

I started doing the same thing as Mikeinreco . I take to terminal. Got tired of the 8 hour show up window, not showing at all, etc. I even had one try to charge me when they picked up even though it clearly said bill 3rd party. It cost me time & money to take there, but its far better in the end.

I guess I should hope that my luck holds out then. I too have a commercial location and a forklift so all that is wasted plus the time if i have to take it to a terminal. I have been lucky in that they have been pretty punctual as far as pick ups goes. the bigger problem for me recently is the skyrocketing cost to ship ! It's up 50% for me (in the last 6 months) from my original choice so now I get 3 quotes and take the lowest which so far is almost always $50 less than the highest quote. There are also class calculators online so that you can calculate your class of freight . Lower classification usually equals lower cost so now I try and pack it all as dense as possible and make my pallets at least and over 1000 lbs each on a standard 40 x48 pallet.
I am sure Gorven could shed some light on this whole process as I believe he know more than most when it comes to LTL.
Any helpful hints to get the best possible pricing would be helpful.
Remember... wherever you go... there you are

Quick and dry way to save on freight is to keep pallets within 48x40x48 dimensions... some will go a little taller up to 50 on the height, but I wouldn't push it.
Keep the pallet as DENSE as possible. Pack tight!

There is a significant driver shortage right now... carriers are not wanting to move "cheap" freight because they are already over capacity!

This is the new "new". Either the economy has to slow down or we need more drivers on the road with equipment!

As Mario stated this is very true. Density is where you save money. If you have any possible way if you dont have a dock or a forklift is get it to a terminal as residential and liftgate service add high expense to your freight cost. Also if you get to where you have say 4 gaylords see if they can be double stacked as this will only take 2 pallet spots and will raise your density which intern will lower freight cost. When your shipping freight and need quote im happy anytime.
