Best things to scrap?

Hey all, my friend and I are new to the scrapping world. We have seen people going through garbage and filling up their trucks but didnt think much of it until we wanted to make some extra cash. We have done a few electronics such as tv's, fans, and a sound system. Just wondering if anyone has a rough ball price park for scrap value of electronics? I know price will vary abit depending on age, brand and size but It would be nice to know some goodies to look for! Also any other tips unrelated to electronics are greatly appreciated. Im pulling the brass out of plugs and tabs from soda cans...any other little things I should be doing?

The best thing to do is do like Matt said and read the old threads. Just dig in and browse around and you'll find tons of info. Other than that, scrap EVERYTHING containing metal. Collect, break down, sort, then sell. Talk to the scrap yard and find out their prices for different metals so you know what to look for and how to identify it.

If you're going for electronics mostly, computers will give you a far better return than stereos, VCRs, etc.

if you have a pickup and a car trailer how about junk vehicles? also don't forget to cut off the cat,remove the battery,alt,starter, cut off all copper wiring that you can get to.
doing these will pay more money that way. i started with a 1/2 ton pickup and a car trailer along with a come-a-long starting out. but now i have 3/4 ton 4x4,18 foot electric tilt car trailer with a 10,000# electric winch.

I can get paid 10 cents for the whole thing...even minus the tab. states that pay deposit. Whee!

heck i got 6-7 bags full of smashed pop cans in 50 gallon garbage sacks.
takes a while to add up but well worth it. i pick mine up when going on a 3 mile walk out here on the back country road! local bar not to far down the road.
out here when there beer is empty out the window it goes. i just take couple plastic grocery bags with me when i go for a walk. does 2 things you. you get some exercise and make some money picking up cans.

I vote for wire . I like how fast it adds up and it's easy to store and aquire . My favorite have to be the most abundant computers , wire in general , cell phones , aluminum cans . But like sledge said if it's metal it has value and should be on your truck.

I end up with most profit from aluminum. is lightweight, bendable ...so its compact, an really easy to find if you know what items to look for.

I hope you are keeping the soda cans too, it is a myth that the tabs are any different (or worth more) than the cans themselves. Just keeping the tabs is like throwing the banana away and eating the skin.

Not where he is located, the government pays $0.05 per can/bottle and $0.10 for liquor bottles.

I am keeping the tabs because depots give you a 5 cent per can with or without the tab. And I know its a myth about the price being more however the al % is way higher isnt it? is that how that myth got started?

BTW thanks alot for all the tips. Im going to make a . And I already have alot of cords and wire saved up $$$. The problem for me is my parents do not approve of me having stock piles of scrap in the yard as I live in the city so I can only get "dirty" and Bigger pieces. if I'm going to the scrap yard the next day I will pick em up though!

Most days the best thing to scrap is whatever happens to be available in the largest quantity. Varies month by month...
But I always like copper and brass. Currently I have a lot with aluminum, so because of volume it's my best item, this month anyway!

save Any color tabs, they have been sold for over 160$ for 10k on eBay once!
