I did four years in the USMC straight out of high school (Camp LeJeune, NC), and moved back to Cali about 5 years ago when I got out. I got into scrapping about 3 1/2 years ago when I bought my first car trailer. I started out buying cars, working on them and reselling for profit when I moved back but as soon as I got a car trailer my main focus went to junk cars. I went to the local community colleges automotive program so I know a little about fixing junkers to make them roadworthy again. Most anything I can't do, I have friends that can help. I also part cars out and love it when I show up expecting to haul a junker off and the car actually only has a couple things wrong that I can fix and pass on to somebody needing cheap transpo. I also handle general scrap metal and actually just tore apart my first microwave today after reading posts on here and watching youtube videos. Scrapping is a decent job for me in an area where there isn't much work or industry. I provide for my wife and two young kids but definitely am looking at trade programs like welding or building inspection so I can get in with a company with benefits and retirement someday. I make enough to take care of my family which is good, but don't have any benefits except the states MediCal program (no dental), and can't afford to buy a house. Scrapping is not really something I want to do for the rest of my life because it looks like I would have to do it the rest of my life-no retirement.
