Those are usually referred to as daughter boards or expansion boards. They are used to switch the direction that slot cards mount to the motherboard or to add additional cards to a system. Backplanes are main connection boards found in rack mounted servers that have slots to add component boards for memory, processers and other devices to make a complete server. Not sure of the price difference between the two.
