HVAC Certification

I emailed a scrapyard here in Austin regarding my 2015 plans to enter the scrap metal business. Told them I was working on getting EPA certified for refrigerant recovery. They told me that Texas state law requires HVAC certification is required to sell any kind of central HVAC equipment and that an "EPA freon certification" will not work. What's the best way for someone to get HVAC certification in quickish fashion?

Perhaps the laws just changed, but all last year my yard in San Antonio TX only required a letter from a licensed HVAC person or company stating you legally obtained your materials. You could literally have a buddy who was certified write a letter stating he gave you permission to turn in all his AC material for him and just use it over and over...

Yard I go to up here doesn't ask, they just tell everyone to make sure all the refrigerant's out.

What are the Training and Education required for HVAC technicians?

HVAC technicians are required to undergo and complete a minimum of six months up to two years of training. Training programs must be taken from technical schools accredited by organizations like HVAC Excellence or (PAHRA) the Partnership for Air-Conditioning, Heating Refrigeration Accreditation.
HVAC technicians must also simultaneously undergo and complete apprenticeship programs with their training. These apprenticeship programs may last up to four years. HVAC technicians can enjoy sponsored apprenticeship programs with classroom and field training from local unions and organizations like the (PHCC) Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors or the Air Conditioning Contractors of America.

I think the Texas law is geared more towards theft than proper handling. There are many laws like this scattered around the country that require various professional/bussiness documents to turn in specific items such as construction related items, hvac, railroad, etc.

The problem is you cannot legislate common sense, so large laws need to be made to go after small problems.

Yea, the college that I've contacted has told me that there will be a 4 year period for me to work as a an HVAC apprentice before I can do what I'm aiming for.

Coincidentally, I'm spending a few days here at the SA Riverwalk, meanwhile...I hope this is a situation I can capitalize on...I have a family to support.

The yard I use doesn't check. I get some HVAC scrap that already is drained (evap coils and compressors) from an AC guy every once in a while and the yard I use doesn't question anything. I'm not condoning the release of freon in the atmosphere, I'm just speaking from when I last got HVAC scrap that was drained properly. Enable private messaging and PM me and Ill tell you which yard.

And I told you to look into what your local collage offers in the way of HVAC Certification & Training. When I went to go get my A+ Certification I had to do it through a collage(I was in Iowa for that one).

Only if you can stomach the laws, regulations, and lawyers. We has lots of each.

They tell me a 4 year apprenticeship is required. I regret getting a bachelor's in science as it's useless.
