Fridge compressors

Hi all, new to the forum, though I've lurked around quite a bit since starting scrapping as a cool hobby. Anyways, during my scrapping adventures I've accumulated quite a few compressors. Now I was wondering what you experiences were with these types of things. Will I need to drain them for the yard to accept them? (Was going to call but closed for 4th of July). Also I heard that I may not be able to turn them in at all because of the link to freon?

Hey Rusty, welcome to the forum. There are a number of threads about fridge compressors and they can be found using the search function also check youtube. As for rules, best to call the yard you plan on taking them to when they do open.

I live in Austin, and yes the wires have already been cut. I've looked about how to open these suckers, but since I don't have access to an angle grinder at the moment I was hoping yards would take them whole.

Some yards take them whole, but you won't get paid for the copper that's in it. You'll get anywhere from steel to motor price and neither are anywhere near copper price.

Got a Harbor Freight? Go buy a $20 grinder and some thin cutoff wheels.

Sealed units by me are .12 lb. Motors are .30 and steel .095

I get .30 lb for my compressors. I feel that's a good deal on them things. Maybe I'll explore cutting them also.

.30lb when you could get over $3.00 lb for the copper inside just doesn't make sense to me.....we've been round and round about this and injunjoe spelled it out with numbers that don't lie. Ya'll wake up !!

thank guys, I'm going to home depot to get an angle grinder tomorrow, and maybe do a little extra tool shopping. Sawzall sounds nice to have outside of scrapping. Anything else other than a good smashing tool?

compressors are pretty easy to take a part and its worth it i got 10$ for 2 compressors not taking them apart and i got 30$ for all the copper out of one that was taken apart it took me bought a 1hour to take one apart but I think I can do it faster now that I know how

tools needed: plenty of duct tape to wrap the wounds bandaids and bantages are for sisseys.
