    I love scrapping!

Just driving around to kill time I came across a roll off full of what looked like an industrial remodel. Well, I managed to get out the conduit, wiring, several 8 foot sections of aluminum tubing, several sheets of aluminum sheeting, a big 6 foot steel beam, an almost new big Rubbermaid tuff trashcan, and a tested and working window AC unit.

It's always amazed me what people will throw away.

And there's more I have to go back for later after supper.

if its in a roll off it could mean your stealing. I have placed roll offs at a customer before an had people taking the metal from there that I had paid to get. Make sure you ask before jumping into them roll offs....

it was my understanding the WM roll offs around here are for general waste going to the landfill. I'll ask around again.

It might be a stipulation that anything INSIDE the roll off is WM property. I leave 55 gal barrels for clients to put stuff in - like brake rotors, etc. It then becomes my property and taking things out of the barrel is larceny (larceny because it does have economic value - as scrap metal).
People may laugh at me, but that's ok. I laugh all the way to the bank.

I almost got hit with a charge for about this same thing, only I didn't get anything from the roll off. The cops said just my presence on the site was trespassing and anything in my truck was attempted theft. I had to go the land owners the next day and argue that no real containers for the demolition debris equaled no rights to possession and that putting the metal out in the open on public use and abandoned land and not putting up "No Trespassing" or cordoning off the area meant it was free game. Basically these fools just abandoned a gas station that was located in a public strip mall parking lot for 7 years. Now some 7 yrs. later they came back to demolish it and hopefully scrap it. The whole thing was nuts and I couldn't believe our stupid ass cops wanted to hit me with two D felonies over it. Eventually, they agreed not to press charges after everyone got tired of scratching their heads over the situation. Bottom line, if it's demolition, you should definitely ask LOL.

Just an update, I swung by the place this morning on the way to work, and talked to the manager, he said that was fine, they're getting charged by WM to pick up the roll offs. He thanked me for cleaning up the mess some other person had made trying to hacksaw the conduit off. But I will go and talk to them before I do anything again.

Now that you have spoken to them, maybe they can become a regular day time stop

I'm hoping to, I have to go back at lunch, he said he's got two pallets full of shelving that needs to go, perfect for my storage unit/shop to get things a little more organized. It's that plastic industrial type.

If I knew it was WM I would of told you mostly it was safe. But WM will buy scrap...so if they are "buying it" an its NOT label as trash...you can get into some trouble but if they where calling it trash then it will fall under those laws (that means its fair game)

If I was you..get something on paper saying that you can encase the cops come rolling around just to be safe if you going to dig in it at night.

Finally got a chance to get over and pick up that shelving, I am pretty surprised. It's about 15 sets of dura-shelf shelving. I think I'm set for shelving in the 10x20 awhile
