    Garbage Picking is Fun!

Hey all, new here. Read through a good chunk of the forum and thought I would share my haul last night.

Haul was two quick loads soloing about half a collection route last night.

    4 BBQ's
    1 TV
    1 CRT Monitor
    3 Vaccums
    2 PC's
    1 Electric Lawn Mower
    1 steel bed frame
    1 sink garbage disposal unit
    1 steel recliner mechanism
    1 printer
    Some other random metals.

I assume the garbage disposal unit is basically just a motor right?

wow...that's really great for one night. I've never been that lucky in one day....well maybe the day someone put 5 ceiling fans in one dumpster was sort of close. Look forward to hearing more from you link.

Last time I tried to bring in a garbage disposal unit my yard wouldn't accept it as electric motor. I would still try though. The worst that can happen is they say no.

my gosh, Shawn, I'll say you had a decent grab...and more. If I found 2 stainless sinks in one day I'd be ecstatic. Hope you get that pic up...anxious to see that silver.

If it is silver it will be stamped as such. Look for sterling, .925, etc. as markings. If not, well, there is a good chance that it is copper under that silver plate.

Not all silver is marked. Markings are nice but you should do a bit of research. 925 and sterling are silver. Other markings that may include silver in the name sometimes contain no silver (nickel silver).

If you grind/sand a spot you may see copper, but if it is silver color under the top layer it is not always silver. Example - US nickel (coin) is 75% copper 25% nickel and doesn't look like copper.

Nitric acid is used to test unmarked silver. You can make it or buy it (research).

If you have a good scale you can perform a specific gravity test. This test allow you to determine the density of the item then compare that value to the know value of aluminum (2.7) copper (8.9), silver (10.5), gold (19) etc. I will provide more info if it is of use to anyone.
