What do you do besides scrap metal?

Just wondering if anyone does anything for work and income besides scrapping metal? Of course everyone in here is a scrapper, but is it a side job, or is this your full time job? Was curious what other things you guys do besides this to make money.



I would assume some of you do scrapping as a side job, where as others do scrapping full time. Just curious

Scrapping for me is extra money.... My main job is for a company that sells wear parts for equipment... things like grader blades, bucket edges, bucket teeth, dozer blades, bucket teeth and street sweeper brooms. We also manufacture snow chains.... The manufacturing of chains is the main thing I do.... from chain building, we generate about 500 bucks a year in scrap but I don't get to keep it... goes back into work and buys us stuff like meat for the occasional bbq and stuff like that

Sell on ebay, consignment shops, pawn shops anything worth more than scrap, or not metal at all.

I'm a housepainter by trade but I don't advertise. I do a few jobs a year now.....I still love painting, but just a few jobs a year satisfies me....scrapping is my passion now. I used to be an avid reader and now I can't concentrate on a book if I have something outside that needs tearing down ! Don't own a TV , but I do listen to talk radio while at my workbench.

I am currently in the military, very soon to be retired out( until then I am working on accounting degree....only need 6 or 7 more classes!). At that time I will be starting a 2 tiered business that includes repo/towing and recycling. I would like it to be a 4 tiered business...... but patience patience!

I am running about 3 projects.

#1 computer recycling.

#2 I buy/fix cars/boats (I have a auto teck guy that makes all the repairs)

#3 buy whole sale an resell whole sale

I am planing on doing...

A small resale store for many of the items I do get.
A mobile mechanic *get more use out of the auto tech*
A mobile computer teck (I have a in-house on a small scale...would like to grow that out)

An a few other things I am not sure if I want to do it yet or not. But one thing I have learned is...Money sitting in the bank makes no money. So...I keep what I need to do what I am doing an I will reinvest into something else...My plan is to have more than one thing making money at any one time.

I work at Amcor Tobacco Packaging. We have four printing presses that take up an entire warehouse that run about 5,760,000 units in an eight hour shift. That's a lot of cigarettes (mostly for Japan) but we also do work for Wrigleys and Cadbury. We print Wrigleys whole line of gum and most of Cadbury's gum lines. I work as a maintenance tech so I get to fix a lot of stuff. We recycle everything at the plant (metal, paper, plastic, etc.) but I do keep all the non-ferrous stuff I come across. We have to pay to have the scrap metal dumpster taken off so I'm saving the company money! I also sell on ebay like a madman and fix stuff up (mowers, etc.) to sell on the side.

Painting contractor who used to have 3 crews going year round, now with the economy its just me and 3 guys. The great part is we do new construction and commercial so theres lots of scrap around. For years I watched it go into the dumpsters - finally got smart.

When the bottom fell out in ranch work round here, i started breaking horses for pay. I was doin alright for a while, then i started scrappin. I scrap FULL time. Occasionally, on my "days off" (Usually sunday) I go out to a buddies ranch and work with their horses. A month or 2 ago, i had no horses to break. Now, business is booming. Unfortunately for them i cant work during the week because im busy with scrappin!

So between scrappin' and breakin horses i dont really have much time for anything. But i love it that way.

I started a Pet Waste Removal company called Scoop Dogg last year after I got sick of working for a lumber yard. Before that I worked on computers on the side to make some extra cash , and I saved everything that I pulled. I had the idea a few years ago to start an Asset Recovery business. Basically go around to big businesses and buy their obsolete computers for little to nothing and tear them down for the recycling purposes, and any thing that could be refurbished quickly would be sold. So this is how I got into the electronics recycling, and we are making a full time job out of it.

I was a dishwasher. The restaurant I worked at closed down and now I'm waiting on another restaurant in the town over to open up where I'm friends with the guy that's gonna head off the kitchen. Might try being a cook. Been that before. Makes a little more money. Still gonna keep scrapping though. Absolutely love it. Soon as I get the tools I need I hope to scrap for a living. Right now my budget sucks up anything I make like a black hole so I'm stuck working with the hand tools I got.

I'm retired. Before I retired, I was a Psychologist with the Veteran's Admin. Best part of scrapping for me, is that I can do as much or as little as I want, when I want and if I decide I don't want to do anything that day, nobody cares. And I do things my way or not at all.

Retired USMC and currently a mainframe computer programmer. I scrap to help keep me busy and keep my butt from polishing the couch too much. I am just socking away my scrap earnings for one of the items on my "bucket list", to enter up in the World Series of Poker in Vegas.

Scrap metal is my main stream income, but I do have a couple of side jobs. A couple days a month, give or take, I work for my uncle, who is a building contractor. I occassionally hire him as well when work is slow for him. And for about 5 weeks in the Fall, I drive truck for corn harvest for an area farming enterprise.

Seems we have the same style eh? This tiered style of entrepreneurship makes sense doesn't it?

My full time gig is as an electronics service tech. I spend 8-10 hours a day fixing farmers broken electronics. The e-waste scrapping thing started because my shop had boxes and boxes of old hardware we had nothing to do with them. And instead of tossing them in the dumpster I talked the owner into giving them to me, I found a refiner and sold it all to them. Then they called back a few weeks later and I realized the possibility of a market for computer waste scrapping.

Once in awhile when the wife is getting her hair done or doing her girly stuff I'll hit up the industrial areas for scrap.
