Where do you work?

I'm in Philly, and I've been wondering. In an urban environment, where can you work? I assume that in a rowhome (where houses are connected to each other), you can't work completely out of your home. Or can you? I mean, there's got to be noise involved given the breaking down process, so wouldn't the neighbors have a fit?



If not at home, where does a part-time (moving to full-time as I learn the trade) scrapper operate?

I work in the shop in my parrents back yard.... it's 16x24 foot and I work outside in one of those 10x20 carport tents.....As for noise... I try not to use any load tools such as grinder or chop saw past 8pm and I stick to a cordless drill or electric impact gun and hand tools

I have a 15x20 single car garage and large fenced in lot solely for this purpose...not in full swing yet but is ready and so am I....

when i started a year and a half ago i had the sam concerns because i live in a town house development but as i went down to the yard i found that alot of guys break down there bulk light iron right off the back of the truck while ther throughing into the pile, seperating ther non ferris (wire, aluminum, copper, brass, etc.) and take it right next door-leaving them with the remains witch alot of guys just through in trash bags concidering at that point its just plastic there left with.

Whatever I can't lift into a truck, I break down on site. I live/work in suburban/urban areas and I don't really use that many power tools.

I have a church that lets me work in their parking lot. As long as I cleanup before I leave they said I'm o.k. to do it. Now I have the guys name and even had him sign something in case somebody(like the cops) tried to give me some flack. Just a suggestion.

Like a few others here, I work out of a self-storage unit. It's a 10x15, and is the perfect amount of space. I can usually store a trailer load of appliances in there..break them down at my convenience, and when ready, load my trailer up and roll out. Rarely do I even see anyone else there...but I'm in a small town. Oh, no outlet for electricity, so I depend on cordless tools. Though I'd like to have my own work shed, I'm more than happy with my current setup.

Might not be a bad idea to keep your eye on the pawn shops for a nice used generator to power the small power tools. Could run dremel's, drill's, sawzall, or chop saw. Out there at the storage unit your not gonna bother anyone close by with the noise.

Where we(P & M Recycling) do our work is on a 12 acre mini farm with a nice 1 car garage and a large storage building for dropping stuff till we're ready to break it down. Have neighbors but not right on top of us, we can burn leftovers.

i rent a 10x20 storage unit, big enough to back my trailer in when I have a load until I can get a few hours to break down whatever it is I have. I've got a couple of 110 outlets I can plug my power tools into, or recharge my phone so I can listen to some tunes while I work. The owner said he doesn't care what I do in there as long as I clean up my mess and I pay my rent on time. Gotta love those kind of landlords.

At home for me. 10 acres with 40x60 quonset and a couple other out buildings. Out on 40th & Plum. That would be 40 miles plum in the middle of nowhere.

I'm paying 92 a month for the 10x20. But there are A LOT of empty storage units around here so the rent has been pretty decent.

Just got bill $125/mo for 10x15. But, I'll go in and haggle/pay ahead. Lasti time I went in the office I paid ahead 6 mo and got the 7th free so it all balanced out to approx $102/mo. Hoping to repeat the same deal. It's heated/cooled power/light shared toilet access.

For those thinking of renting a space, negotiate a little. Can't hurt to ask for better deal.

The crap n scrap I've found near the garbage over there has paid for at least a month rent, too. If I went over more often, the trash would easily pay the rent. Good investment that space, IMO. I got a vintage chrome table in there and couple chairs. Work on the quieter scrapping, sorting, thinking, etc. I meet people for CL sales.
