cbm breakdown. worth it?

7.5 lb garage door motor results... 7.5 lbs @ $0.26 =$1.95/ breakdown 1.4 lbs #2 @ $2.40 lb = $3.00 + 6.25 lbs steel @ $0.11 lb =$3.65 roughly. Profit of $1.70 broken down. I can only do around 3 to 4 an hour. I'm not willing to work that hard for 5 or 6$ an hour. What I did find is it is approximately a 50% increase over cbm price. I will use this formula to determine when a Cbm is worth it to break down. I know motors yield diffrent amounts, and prices vary. I thought I'd share this in any case. I think it is a pretty accurate formula.

The price on #2 is pretty low! That is why it is not worth the effort. Once you get a system you can do many more per hour also.

$3.00 for #2 seems more like the going price unless they pay much less up there!

I find they are a little harder to pull the windings then other motors so I soak each in a bath of oil and let drain then it slides out like butter.

Personally I throw the stator with windings in a wood fire or my home made incinerator. This gets all the crap off and softens it up a bit. Then it comes out like butter. And odd thing is my yard pays +1 3.15 lb if its burnt lol. Dont ask me why, I dont understand it, but it what it is.

The yards here will not buy any copper that has been in a fire. They might even turn you in at this point with all the new legislation.

I keep seeing 3$ or about. Or even more. I've searched around here. Greytruck I suppose you are the closest. Do you have similar prices? I guess I need to search even more yards then. I'm saving my#1 and #2 till I can fund a better price.

Good idea Russell. Is there a choice of yards near you? In these parts there is a lot of competition.

You may be able to make easy money with just a few phone calls.

Last time I was at the yard Copper1 was at $2.30 on the sign. I didn't even what to ask what #2 was. Back on 2-07-12 At Metro recycling in Blue Island.

Yes injunjoe, in fact there is probably an over saturation over yards around here. I think prices are just low around here Greytruck yards look 20 or 30 miles from me w/ similar prices. I have I'd guess 8 yards in a 10 miles radius. I couldn't even count outside that. I live in the 3rd most populated metro area in the states. I figure they are supplied with enough they don't have to pay.

Russell, I agree that you should check around. Eau Claire, Wi. for example is paying #2 Copper

I'll be sticking with my current yard for my ferrous. There has got to be a yard paying better for non. I've just yet to fund it, within a reasonable driving range. Thanks for the prices gentlemen.

ANd remeber everything is worth breaking down, even if it appears not.' Would you rather get 2.50 for a motor or 7.50. Breaking down that one motor may be all you have for the week and mean the difference between gas in the car or no gas..lol.
