propane tanks

Finally got a sweet scrap spot, old abandonded farm owned by a farmer he gave me a tour of the place today... atleast 10 tons of scrap steel plus some copper, aluminum, and brass things. Ive stumbled upon a bunch of tanks i think there propane all but one had a hole or crack in it, the full one was very heavy dont think it was water and the part on the top said "Oreg" im assuming meaning its a regular.
Was just wondering if propane companies will pay for full tanks even if there rusted to recover the gas from it. What do you do with full tanks? just leave them?

I use any propane I find, then scrap them.. Brass valve.. I have to cut the propane tanks in half with a sawzall to be able to scrap em.

People that play with metal art use propane tanks to build things like pigs and other artsy things. Might be a way to get a little more than scrap price. Oxygen bottles make excellent wind chimes.

Since they all have holes or cracked this doesn't matter but I will say it anyways from my understanding a propane tank is sold for about a dollar a gallon that it holds. for instance a 500 gallon will be around 500 bucks. if there used the price doesn't change much either. This is my understanding.

Surely a small propane tank that goes to a gas grill doesn't have 40 gallons inside a container that is the size of a 5 gallon bucket? ...I have been wrong before though.

I feel like an idiot! I reread what decjr wrote and I guess I missread what he was talking about. He has a bunch of grill propane tanks to get rid of, not big ones for homes!!! That makes sense, sorry but here are answers to your questions:

I was refuring more to the tanks that heat homes than the small ones for grills. The propane tanks for grills are typically 20 lbs and if you exchange a tank for one that is full you will pay around 20 dollars. If you buy brand new they can be more spendy like 40 dollars. I am not sure why they are expensive to buy a brand new grill propane tank but I can only imagine it is because the demand for them is fairly regular so they can charge what they want.

It has been a while for me, I like charcoal. If you bring in the tank and exchange it around here it is around 20 dollars. Here the propane cost is mild and to fill up my 500 gallon tank this spring was around 650 dollars.

Around here so many people are looking for large propane tanks for there hog and turkey confinements, they seem to pop up over night here. When I moved to my farm we had an extra tank behind my machine shed and a guy showed up one day with a trailer with full intent on buying that tank. It is an 800 gallon and they guy offered my wife 1000 dollars but I wasn't home and she turned him down. I wish she would of got there number.

New tanks around me are $45 and up. You can take almost any tank and exchange it for under $20 by me. now you have a brand new filled propane tank. Sell on craigs list for at least $40 --- $20 profit no sawz all required
