Getting quotes - want to have an honest idea

Hello vehicle scrappers! I'm generally not in this area of the forum but I feel as if I am going blindly into this situation and I"m hoping to get a realistic/honest idea of what this vehicle would be worth to junk. I believe that this would be the best place to find such an answer. Thank you in advance for your help!!

    1979 Kennworth Dump Truck
    weighs 20,260lbs
it runs, i have title, all the parts are on it, junking it due to high DMV fees owed

If any clarification or more information would help just let me know!

Wondering if you can sell it complete, out of state, to someone who could use it. Not sure on legalities of that.

I am taking a blind guess here, but if the weight scrap value is $2,000 are you asking if you can get more than that on CL or Ebay or some truck forum with the note that it is for parts only? I would hope so. That has to have better than scrap value to someone and still be legal.

runs? hek, the motor and tranny alone be worth lots more than that. You got to check around and ask at shops and such, maybe at a dirt/rock hauler outfit too. There's so many parts on there they change out every day I guess, the rear axles, the bed, even the cab

Could you legally sell it for farm use only?

Can't help but think many livestock or veg\fruit growers out there could find a use for it.
If it wasn't for the $ in $crap, it would just be.....

If you happen to have a truckstop around, they usually have free magazines for drivers/owner/operators to pick up. All kinds of trucker related companies advertise in them. There is some huge trucking junkyards that buy/sell, and that might be the best way for you to get the info for them. Those "junkyards" will go halfway across the country for a "good deal". Good luck,

hek yeah! They've got those big tow trucks too, it doesn't have to be road worthy for them to haul it

After re-reading the post I think she is buying it of a Craigslist ad and wants to know how much to offer the guy? I could be wrong.

Julie, check this out very diligently. especially if it is from craigs list. if it runs and drives, especially if it is a diesel something dosn't smell right here. Im sure some of the buyers here would jump on that for more then scrap price.

I know I'm out of familiar territory here but it's my dad's dump truck that we use to bring the granite scrap down the street so it can be ground up and made into asphalt. It runs totally fine there are just approximately $7,000 in DMV fees that have to be paid in order to register it. We are moving our shop and after we get done moving the granite out of this yard he wants to get rid of it. So i took it upon myself to help out and make sure that I try and get the most out of it. He is so busy right now with all the jobs we are right in the middle of, tearing down the CNC and the Bridge Saw so they can be transported to the new shop and making sure that they are actually going to fit in there not to mention having to go out to the template appointments for the new jobs. I figured that I could at least try to help out.

Thanks for trying to look out for me! Are there people on here that buy vehicles from far away? I honestly didn't even look...

I'm not sure how that works either. I'm sure you just can't sell it out of state and the fees magically go away that would be too easy

$2,000 is the highest I've been quoted so far but I have this nagging feeling that i would be getting gyped at that price. I am basing this on the reactions of the people that I've requested quotes from: they always have to forward the info and pics to a specialty dept and get back to me. When they do there has been a consistant message ending in "call me back if it's still available" and when i do all have beat around the bush asking me what I'm trying to get for it and what other people have quoted me. I don't give them any of this. After they tell me what their offer is I let them know where they stand compared to the others and then 1/2 have said that they are going to try and match and/or beat the highest quote. Something fishy there I think

if he wants to get rid of it that badly i would definitely recommend getting in touch with a commercial truck junk yard as mentioned above, because the engine and trans alone could very well be worth $2000 to them(big truck diesels are VERY expensive motors), and a working dump bed is another $1500-$2000, and the rims if they are aluminum(cant tell for sure from the pics) are worth above scrap value for sure.

i definitely would NOT sell that to my local yard, seek out a specialist company and you may be pleasantly surprised what the parts are worth

you can sell that truck out of state, it is generally out of state trucks you cant sell in Ca. because of all the taxing regulations (were the government and were here to help you). it would be a shame to scrap or junk that truck. every state has different regs concerning dump trucks. I would buy it in a NY second, if I were able.

Unless the DMV put a lien against the title, I don't know if the fees follow the title? I don't even know if DMV's attach liens against titles? I suggest calling your local DMV as if you were buying this truck.

I scrapped my old single axle International dump last summer, and they gave me shredder price.

That having been said, it wasn't roadworthy, and wasn't going to be ever again, at least not at a price that'd make it economical. I'd made a few calls, and none of the junkyards offered me more than I could get taking it directly to the scrap yard, but part of that is because that year and model weren't in much demand, parts wise. That KW has a lot more of its sisters and cousins still running the road though, and it's sure to be worth something in parts, if not whole.

How many miles are on it, Julie? I drive one occasionally that is within a tankful of fuel of turning over 700,000. (Not a typo. Seven hundred thousand miles.)
