Has anyone ever broken down or scrapped a semi truck, day cab, semi trailer van box or flatbed.
Has anyone ever broken down or scrapped a semi truck, day cab, semi trailer van box or flatbed.
I remember an old thread that dealt with that but don't recall much other than it could be better to run it accross the scale as is and move on.
Of course the day cab might be Al but will require a lot of work to sell as clean Al. If you know trucks re-selling the parts may prove to be the real profit in this deal, If you have the place to hold onto it I would do the research on possible resell of parts. Mike.

Now go beat the copper out of something, Miked
i just act as the middle and sell them directly to the highest paying yard. can be an easy couple grand. if the van body is aluminum your off to the races
Iv often thought about buying van body rigs to scrap. Iv got the space and could hack away at one. Iv seen a bunch for around 2000. Noooo idea what the box would be worth if it was aluminum. Or if it would even be worth payin 2000 for.. As for semi trucks, iv never seen a tractor priced good enough to buy for scrap.... As im writing this i find a 97 kenworth t800 with sleeper for 1600 bucks. Blown motor. Ni idea if its worth it though.
If I didn't have bad luck, I'd have no luck at all...

Cory had a thread on it, but not sure whatever came of it. Maybe he'll chime in if he sees this thread.
Sirscrapalot - Only truck he's ever scrapped was a hotwheels.
Probably there aren't many bigger trucks being totally scrapped from the get-go because there is such a good market for used parts. There's always an axle, transmission or the like that is worth salvaging before the scrapping happens.
I had the opportunity to watch a guy who got a contract to scrap out about 40 "B-train" aluminum chip vans. He told me he salvaged everything he could--he sold tires in about 3 grades from the decent ones right down to the "skins". The axles and suspensions, (tandems and tridems) which were mostly air-ride, went to guys who wanted to retrofit a trailer or build a trailer. Any salvageable air brake equipment on the trailers went somewhere else.
He and two young guys ran a torch and a couple of gas powered abrasive cutters for two or three months, working dawn to dusk on those trailers. They shipped aluminum scrap out by the truckload. He ran out of time on the last 8 or so and had to get the local scrapper who had a shear to come in and finish them off. He told me he ran through three scrap outfits before the local guy finally came into line with pricing.
And who bought tons of his worst tires? The guys who ran on pavement in the city (mostly Vancouver)- dump trucks, delivery trucks, etc. Gads! I guess life is cheap there!
Jon.
It was all battered, an not a collector item! Deep breaths bear! Breathe..in..breathe out..
An yep, tossed right in on with my shred, the thing was battered, dented, no wheels, all torn to hell basically. I found it in a box of stuff I had gotten at a yard sale.

It should have at least gone with die cast. Man you are just throwing money away.

........Auto cast? Eh? Get it? LOL im probably the only one laughin.
lol...Ya'll are to much. Jord..I'm starting to think your crazier then I am.
No worries Brandon, I was able to absorb the lost revenue..lol. Toys are worth some good change on resale. From action figures to hotwheels, if in at lest decent condition. People pay crazy prices for the darnedest things.
Sirscrapalot - Jord is now a member of the crazy club, an famous you made it into a tagline.
I am glad you were able to absorb the losses. lol
I did some dabbling in toys at one point.
When I lived in Jersey I went to my local goodwill on almost a daily basis, I was able to pick up some nice toys that I was able to flip for a good profit.
Whole shopping cart full of 1989 ERTL force one airplanes still on the blisterpacks for $2-$3 each, sold them on evilbay, flea markets and yard/estate sales, probly made 15-20 times what I paid for them. Also got a 15 piece Voltron space vehicle set still in the package with instruction manual for $8 and sold that for $100 on craigslist.
This thread went from semi trucks to toys, sorry back to trucks .

The only thing hasn't already been covered is those front corners on trailers worth saving from scrap, they're always needing those to fix damaged ones ; )
now, back to toys haha ; ) about ten years ago I was browsing through Goodwill and found a whole store display of old (real) balsawood airplanes, the whole display from cheapies to bigger rubberband powered ones. I got one or two of each and later got to thinking dayum! shoulda bought the whole bunch, but they were all already gone : (
Ahhh i can see it now

LOL just kidding. I havent been to a goodwill in ages. Other than to donate stuff. May not be a bad idea to look for resale items and maybe get some decent loads of broken stuff. Completely off topic, are goodwills privately owned? Or is there a big chain of command you gotta go through to be able get material?
Back to trucks again too... Whats the most any of you guys would pay for say a van body truck, day cab tractor and sleeper tractor? Just to give me an idea.
Well i mean the trailer i would cut up and haul in already broken down. The semis they take them you have to drain the fluids.I am looking to do this maybe next year moving up alittle bit but who knows.Just asking for some opinions
Focker if you haven't looked yet, there is lots of good stuff in that thread Cory started. You can find it here..

Also found this one on the trailer's.. http://www.scrapmetalforum.com/scrap...i-trailer.html
Hope it helps. Old posts but I'm sure the info is still useful.
Jord..sure is a lifetime membership. An Goodwill is a for profit company, I believe their all owned by the company, but don't hold me to that. I don't deal with them anymore, myself. Only local thrift stores for me. No big chain of command, an I like to help those that help my community.
Brandon an Bear - I agree on the toys. Having worked for Toys R Us for numerus years, I tend to keep an eye out for such things, as I used to deal with collectors an dealers a lot when I worked there. lol.
I blame bear for the hi-jack he got me going on Hot Wheels.
Edit to Add: Don't know why the toysRus is coming up as a link, as I wasn't trying to link it. I just typed it out an it came up blue and as a link.

The yard I work for gets trucks and trailers all the time, but never aluminum dump bodies. It goes like this : Senebogen with clam rips body off and sends to the baler and throws the rest of the tractor to the excavator mounted shear. He shears the tires off the rims and crunches up engine and tranny to be thrown in the cast iron to be broken pile. The frame and axles get moved to me (the burner) and cut up for heavy melt. Trailers are treated the same way. The whole process takes about 15 minutes
