I was just curious as to if there is a way to find out if a cat is worth anything it not? Even if i take it off is there a way to look? Thanks for the help.

Depends on what it's off and whether it's an aftermaket. Could be anywhere from $2 to $300.

Imports are worth more, aftermarket are worth practically nothing..

The one I got right now is off a diesel. Do some have more platinum then others? Do I want ones with Lorraine or higher miles? Thanks

Diesels have more platinum in them as the temperatures generated in diesel engines are too much for palladium which is used more in petrol engines.

old diesel cts were lower in pm, they have been relegislated and the newer ones I believe now have more pm then auto cats.

Rough idea of what a '95 Pontiac Grand Am cat is worth? I am scheduled to pick one up tomorrow and head straight to the yard with it per the persons request. Gonna see if I can buy the cat off him before I haul it in.

about $40-$60 depending on the buyer. before you buy it take a strick or rod put it in both ends to make sure both biscuits are there and in whole condition. make sure it is not an aftermarket. Many muffler shops did "favors" for people and replaced their old cats with new aftermarket ones. one was caught here taking hundreds to the pm buyer every month for years, he owned several famous franchise shops here. they couldnt convict him of any thing because he gave value for value but he did loose his franchises. they caught him or rather his driver in Pensicola after selling a truckload , he had $66,000 in cash on him.-

Ok diesel converters aren't worth hardly anything.Around $15 or so.You would think they would be worth alot as big as they are but they're not.

Idaho the one off of a grand am hard to say without looking but i would say a MINIMUM OF $70

95 Grand Am Could be either one of two cats, it can be a large breadloaf which is paying $70 right now due to the platinum market drop, or it can be a low grade domestic, if it says FLOW on it it is low grade, $30

Except DYNAFLOW, which is an aftermarket brand. Worth - $2 if they'll take it at all.

Focker your PM box is full. Cant argue old diesel aint worth much. But you said just diesel not OLD diesel. $20 bucks still better then shred price Heck I just cut off my first 2 cats this week what do I know. I am learning though.

im not sure since ive been out of car scrapin for a while. but like I said diesels have been re regulated, higher pms and I think there is another scrubber now also like old fords two cats per exaust line. one os lower pm then the other. this system maybe a retro fit for older diesels im not sure.

For the grand am cat, if it's a square-ish shape that's narrower on the top than on the bottom, it's called a breadloaf. They're currently at $83 here. If it's a round cat that has a 3/8" flange of metal running down each side, that's called a large flow. Up here those are graded as either AC 4-dot or medium GM, depending on the buyer and your relationship with them. Prices for those are from $83 to $102. On the diesel cats; if it's 2007 or older, they're pretty cheap, especially when you consider how big they are. The older Fords and Dodges are currently going for around $25 here, while the GMs are at $5. A couple of the buyers will just lump them all together and pay $10 on any older diesel. On the newer diesels, '08 and up, they are worth quite a bit. The 3-piece Dodge systems (foil pre, diesel particulate filter or DPF, and the converter) sells for anywhere from $450 up to $800 depending on the part numbers. On those, the 2008-9 models are the best, with the newer ones being the cheaper ones. The Ford systems, which consists of a DPF and the converter bolted together in a single assembly, sell for $225. The GM systems, which are a smaller pre in front of the DPF, sell for about $200. On the 2012 and newer systems, I've only seen a few of the Dodges and Fords, which are currently going for $250. They are all a single assembly now, no more multiple separate pieces on the exhaust pipe. One way to tell if the cat you have is a newer expensive one vs. an older cheap system; the newer systems have small stainless steel fuel lines (about 1/4") plumbed into the exhaust for the emission "purge" system, while the older ones do not. As well, the newer ones use O2 sensors while the old ones don't.

-edit- forgot to add, on the Grand Am, if it's a round cat that doesn't have the 3/8" flat flange/seam of metal running down each side, and instead just has smooth sides, that's graded as an AC 4-dot, which is the $83 cat.

Went to my local exhaust shop (know the guy fairly well) he said the way to tell if there worth anything or not, is to look for like a honey comb inside of it, like mesh. If there is alot in there its worth more! Hope hes correct. Thanks for the help guys
