    Common Mistake?

Was just tearing down an old motor and decided to check the nuts to see what they were made of. Son of a gun... Stainless. Hard telling how many I've thrown away without checking. Not much weight, but I had to take them off anyway. Hope this helps someone new, like I am.

I have a magnet mounted above my breakdown bench with a small container under it.

When I think it may be stainless I toss it up on the mag. If it sticks it goes in my steel stash, if it don't stick it just falls into the stainless collection container.

I have a keychain magnet on my garage keys, that way it's always handy. Was given to me by the scrap yard around Xmas

My garage door is covered on the inside by magnets. There is always one available by just reaching up and grabbing one assuming that the door is open and above my head.

rule 1: always have a neomydium mag near. Had to look that one up... I always have magnets close by, but for some reason it never dawned on me to check the nuts before. That's why I made my first post. Incase someone made the same mistake. I like the magnets from computer hard drives. They are a lot stronger. Didn't know until you came up with the name that they were called neomydium magnets. Thanks for the info.

MelRay....my apologies on the spelling. lol. I just glanced at that today and realized I didn't spell neodymium correctly. I have 1 of 2 things to blame it on. I posted that from my android because my PC was being used at the time.......or when inebriated, my thumbs get the dreaded d & m dislexia on a smartphone. In all seriousness though, the magnets from HDDs are neodymium (rare earth) mags. They are quite strong and will find pretty much anything ferrous. Be careful with them though if you get a lot around each other. I've actually caused some nasty blood blisters and have seen them hit each other hard enough to shatter while doing "reasearch". Okay so what, I was playing. You can also get them on ebay and they can be quite handy in other applications. I've used the really small ones before to keep a dryer door closed when the clip broke on it, and in the past when running wire or cable I have used a few stacked together and stuck to the end of a screwdriver to catch and pull a steel snake through a small wall opening. A variety of uses can be concocted.

Myth Busters did a segment on magnets and credit cards. They were unable to erase information with available magnets.

Just because you dont work in a scrap yard doesnt mean you dont need one. If you are collecting and selling scrap metal you NEED a magnet

Sars....I have magnets everywhere and nothing gets erased. I see double vision and forget a lot of **** sometimes, but that could be the hooch. Unless you're rubbing one across your old crt screen, you should be fine. After all, we live on a ball with a magnetic core.

Their only mentioning those because their powerful and easy to come by, just tear down an old junk hard drive and there will be 2 of them in there. Just don't pinch your fingers in between them, it'll hurt.

I know that there are a plethora of magnets to be had when breaking down appliances, but ask your local yard for one next time you are in. We have 3 big boxes of different sized ones (even the big honking ones) that we give to customers. They are the keychain ones to boot!
