Pretty impressive machine, but I have to assume only large recyclers could afford it. Just curious, what does a machine like this cost?

There should be a machine before chopping the wire into small easily movable bits. Out put from that machine would go to a elevated conveyor to lift the material to the granulator.
Watching this guy shove small hand fulls of wire in to the input doesn't really do much for me.
From the conversations I've had with an individual who owned and operated wire granulators there is alot to profitably operating them. Set up of line, tweeking the setting on the separating table is crucial. Accounting for and dealing with the loss of copper in this system. Dealing with the changes in material and how you adjust for it.
Lastly when these machines are set up and running great you will devour a lot of wire and have to so you can justify the costs. My friend made me believe this is one of the most competitive areas of recycling with very tight margins. If you are serious about getting into this business I recommend you work as hard at research as you expect to do when you are set up and running. 73, Mike

A complete chopping line with a pre shredder, granulator, separator and all of the right "stuff" to hold the dust is about $150,000 delivered and installed from a good USA company. Electricity depends on where you live...to run 8 hours a day could be anywhere from $1500 to $2500 a month.

Yeah by the background it looks like its the demonstration model for the factory that makes them.
That and the speed of the operator, and the no use of personal protection at all...
The factory I read about in China that scraps just Christmas decoration lights, its in a area that has a lot of factory's doing the exact same thing.
The reason why is because 'they can sell the plastic chop to shoe manufacturers'.
And if that's the reason the profit margin must be quite small.
But having a small setup at home could be worth doing as it upgrades low price scrap up to Copper #2 (or #1?)prices.
Like this guys car wiring looms.
Making the chopper seems to be the hardest part with machining having to be done. I have a small electric hand planer for wood, I wonder if that's a good start?

Nice reply miked, you have been around granulator's. I run one a lot bigger than this one. our's has a pre grinder which was a book shredder from one of our other site's, up a conveyor then into the machine, our machine also seperate's the fluff (paper and fiber) from the plastic chop's and copper fine's, which I'm still looking for a buyer of them, it also has a magnet on the belt after shreeding to pull out all steel. We paid $750.000 for the machine delivered and an other $50.000 for conveyor and pre shreder and elec. work and set up. On a good day we run about 10.000 lbs. of #1 insulted at a rate of between 68 and 74 percent recovery so that's about 7.000 lbs. of #1 chop's a day, not bad. The machine paid for it self in the first 6 mounth's. Boss won't let me post pic's, sorry.

Where are you getting the wire to feed that machine???
I ran your math, and the only way it works out that the machine paid for it'self in a year would be if you where purchasing 70% wire at a 40% price and have no expense associated with the disposal of the insulation and the machine ran maintenance free with no electricity. that assumes you are feeding it 10000Lb of wire every single work day for a year. you must have bought it use or be leasing it, because I left out depreciation also.!?

When we bought this machine new as a demo from the Vegas show several year's back we worked 2 shift's a day, we also buy a large amount of wire daily 25% from public customer's 75% from commercial account's. I'll finish this thread after I get home from work tonight.

Shine bros in spencer iowa has the biggest granulator i have ever seen...They run 6 to 8000 lbs an hour thru it....they are a end supplier and deal directly with foundries. They have mountains of insulated and run everyones wire together...everyday they run it there is a gaylord of copper dust that no one gets paid for lol...Was also told blades are 25grand everytime they change them.
