If I use the option to use Ebay's shipping service, do I have to pay the shipping in advance or does it get taken out of the buyer's payment?
I have searched for the answer but I can't get a clear picture of how this works.

Ebay has their own shipping service now? Or are you refering to their consignment service. If you're refering to the latter, there's criteria and the fee's higher but everything comes off the top before the money comes to you.
USPS comes out of Paypal immediately. Fedex is charged to your account but does not appear until after delivery, takes a while. Just make sure you track it or it can be a surprise later.

~You have to start somewhere to get anywhere~
If you choose to ship via ebay, you will not have to fork over your own money to pay for shipping. First situation is that you have a new account and they put the payment on hold for the item. The shipping cost is taken out of that money that they have held. Second situation is you have an older account and you get the money right away, of course you can just use that money to buy the shipping. Their prices are good for shipping, and you can get better discounts as your sales account gets bigger, including if you become a top rated seller. For larger items, check out the pricing for Fedex Smart Post. They use USPS to ship the last leg of the trip, and this is usually cheaper than USPS Parcel Post.
USPS fees aren't charged monthly- they're withdrawn from your PayPal balance as soon as you click on "Purchase Postage". if you have $100.00 in PayPal, and make a $5.00 purchase for postage, you'll have $95 left in PayPal.

Canada post has a program called Venture 1 for customers sending a lot of mail and parcels my discount is about 10%, what ebay has done is to arrange such an account with the various carriers based on volume of shipping which is perhaps in the millions of packages daily.
This shipping arrangement that ebay managed to secure was a slick move we all benefit, my savings now exceed what Canada Post were offering on Venture 1.
