Tried a new yard while in the south chicagoland region

Well I live 55 miles south of chicago but I was doing a job up in the south region roughly 12 miles south of downtown.

The prices I got that day were

    $200/ton for steel
    $0.08/LBs for Lead Acid Battery

Now the steel is right in the dot just looking at it from price stand point, but the Lead acid was extremely low. Now back to the steel, I brought in a small 215LBs load, measured in small sections on my 50LBs digital scale. That should equate to roughly $21.50 or so. Their scales marked it at 100LBs, which is way off.

Seeing as how to scale was off a lot more than the yards Im use too and the lead acid being lower then steel pricing. I will never use this yard again.

.08 cents a lb for lead batteries? That is a whacking. I get .38/lb here in central Indiana. If the math and gas work out, I'd store those puppies up and haul a trailer load down to Central Indiana. .08 is a jawdropper to me. I can hardly believe that- someone up there is getting rich off the backs of hard working scrappers for sure!
I'm so into scrapping.. When my Steel Toe Boots Wear out, I cut the Steel out of them and recycle the Toe!

happyscrapper: Something is amiss don't you think? I mean if he was getting .30# or even .20# it would still be robbery, but .08#??? Dang where is the Vaseline??

Try Marble Metals in Hammond, In. next time. They dont take steel, but seem to pay the best in the area for non-ferrous. They're just over the border from Burnham, off of Sheffield, on Marble St.
