    1994 Ford Taurus V6- Is there a Pre-Converter?

    All-
Hey I just picked up a 1994 Ford Taurus GL today with a V6 3.0.. Is there a Pre on this vehicle, I didn't see one, and Google has been of ZERO help. Just wanted to see if any of you guys had scrapped one to know if/where the pre- is? Obviously I have a front and a back manifold, some diagrams show there is a Pre- after a manifold- but not sure if it is the front or the back manifold.. also got conflicting info that the SHO model has a pre- regular Taurus doesn't? It has a single exhaust- not a dual.. so wanted to pick your guys' brains!
    Thanks
    Aaron

I'm so into scrapping.. When my Steel Toe Boots Wear out, I cut the Steel out of them and recycle the Toe!

fords are weird and none are the same, we joke that they have an erector set at the factory when they install the exhaust, but on a v-6 you should have 2 pres(one coming off each side of the engine) and one regular after the pipes come together. but you could have 2 regulars also and no pres. and one last thing being a ford and it being almost 20 years old these may have been removed a long time ago and also stand a chance of being empty

edit, im not sure how many cars you have scrapped, but they don't look like a gm or a foreign either, most fords have a shield around them, also the pre's you would be looking at have a shape of a kidney and some graders call them a kidney

Since you mentioned the SHO, if you or anyone else on here gets one of those, DO NOT scrap it. They are worth good money in almost any condition.
If ford dealerships get them on trade in they have to send them back to ford.

    Cory-
Thanks man.. It does have an OEM underneath the car (that is an easy check) Now the key is.. hopefully it isn't empty..but I am astounded at how packed under the hood this engine is- it has to be a Blankety Blank to work on. Most fords are. I scrapped an Escort ZX2 and I literally had to pull the front clip off and radiators in order to get a clean cut to get the converter off the manifold.

I just dragged it in today, and my wife headed out for a girls night.. so I'm itching to get under the hood.. but wanted to get some insight from you guys as this is my first Taurus.

    Brandon-
Thanks for the tip on the SHO, why do the dealers need to send them back? I'm REALLY curious on that one!

on the four cylnders like the escort, its easiest to undo the bolts on top of the converter, you will have to take the shield off the front, we use our impact with a couple extensions to get the main bolts and they will be deep well sockets, then cut the bottom with the saw. pretty sure you will still have to take the radiator off but I wouldn't notice that, its one of the first things I take off

    Cory-
Next tool I need to get is an Impact Gun! These were so rusted when I got to it.. the nuts had just rusted to virtually nothing to the bolts. When I pulled my VIN check on the car I noticed that it had been declared a total loss by the insurance company about 6 years ago.. I had a sneaking suspicion that this car had been sitting in about 8 ft of water at one time. I had to bust the shield off, and tear off what I had said.. it was a %)#$* :-)

Ok, got under this bad boy.. Looks to be 2 converters (Smallish.. like an escort) and none in the main-line of the exhaust. They are under the vehicle and not in the engine compartment.. if these are the same as the ZX2 converters I pulled.. they will pay $85 a piece.. and THAT will be a good day (Pending they are full) Car only has 113K miles so I stand a good chance of them still being relatively full! I'll keep you posted gents!

    Sledge,
Don't know why they have to go back, that is what I have been told by several employees at different dealerships.

I wonder if I ever get an SHO, if I should run it by the Ford Dealership in Town before tearing it down? I'm sort of intrigued by what the deal is with them!! :-)

    Cory:
I was surprised at how much wire I pulled out of the Taurus.. Got to be a good 20lbs at least. Only downside was all steelies on it, and the battery was gone, but at over 3200 lbs.. should be a good day at the yard at $240/ton presently.

    Brandon:
Very True, I do see SHO's come up from time to time, maybe I will put them on my radar.. I'd dig pulling it into the dealership on a trailer and having sales guys or mechanics fight over who gets it :-) "I'll start the bidding at $1000......" HA!

Cory: Well a trip to the yard today .. price dropped a bit. We are now sitting at $220/ton. So I missed out on about another $30 bucks on the Body.

On the Cats: Car had 2 and both were graded as "Low Standards" at my Core Buyer.. Pd $40 bucks each.
So these definately are not the same Converter than the ones they install in the Escort 4 bangers!

But being what they are- I'd snag some more Taurus' if I can- 3200+ lbs.. nice meaty vehicle! Maybe my next one I can get Alum Rims on it to boot!

Oh and I was close- 21 lbs of wire I pulled out of this beater with a heater!

to be honest I think you got overpaid on the fourbanger, the most ive ever got for any ford is $52, I think they may have graded it as a foreign or something though I really don't see how

Nice going on the Taurus, made some nice $$ there. The Escort 4 cyl cat was graded as a "high-grade Ford", or some buyers call it the "Ford widemouth" class. Not common to get that on one from an Escort, though. Usually it's just on the ones out of the Focus, which looks sorta similar. In any case, you still made good $$.

My core buyer is absolutely fair, they are the only place I will take my Cats, they will actually TEACH you.. the main grader there is awesome. One day a guy pulled in with a stake bed truck- loaded with cats, this guy pulled 3 gaylords out into the parking lot, stood on the truck, literally picked them up and was calling out to the person writing down "Breadloaf" "Small Foreign" "Aftermarket" etc etc. He HAS to be right or one bad call could cost the owner having to buy 6-10 more to break even off a bad call- and he is spot on. They don't try to hose anyone and I LOVE that about them. Good honest folks!
