Scrapping vehicles without titles

What do people do about picking up vehicles that do not have titles?

I know this is a super old thread but in hawaii they dont care if there's a title or not. We just sign a affidavit and were good to go. Ive made some cash getting free cars from craigslist.

Call around...there might be a yard around you that will take them without titles. I have one. With some yards, you will have to cut it into 3 or 4 pieces for it to no longer be a car.....or cut it up and stuff it into another car with a title. Ebay the parts out to the max...that will make cutting it up easier. Additionally, I always get written permission to tow a vehicle without a title, just to cover my own rear.

Be careful with those. Lots of people have a habit of "leaving their cars" with freinds and then never returning for them. The freinds get tired of the car and then call a scrapper to take it.

The original owner never knows until his car is long gone. They could claim you stole the car.

My scrapyard make me cut these cars in half to take them, which isn't the biggest thing in the world if you've got a good Sawsall.

We had a form we kept on file for 3 years after for any car we hauled in without a title, plus we required the car be at least 11 years old to buy it without a title. But no title meant an automatic drop in price of $100 from our normal paying price. I bought a 84 diesel suburban for 25 bucks because of that.

I am thinking VIN #, date of purchase, names of buyer/seller. Anything else?

a part that you sign saying that it is your own car and you certify that it truly is yours. and i think a license plate number if it has one

For now I've been using a generic 2 part receipt book, but I think it would be easier to have an actual form.

Bought 4 vehicles so far...all had titles though. Seeing more and more vehicles for sale without titles.

{ I had people ask me what I need their License Number For I Tell them Straight Out I Don't Know you this car could be stolen} Only one has ever refused to let me get their License Number.

In United Kingdom if we have no title as long as we get ID we can scrap.

in WI you can get forms from the DMV, "Junked Vehicle Bill Of Sale" Owner fills out their information, buyer fills out theirs, and then you check if the title was "lost or stolen" or marked "junked" and the title was already surrendered to the DOT to be removed from the system

I do things a little different although I know my way is not the right way! I look and listen to the person who's selling the car, most of the time you can tell if someone honestly owns a car or if their just blowing smoke up your butt, because if you think about it everyone has a story behind their car and they don't mind telling you their story lol, those of you who who pick up junk cars frequently know just what I mean so that's what I mean by listen to them. On the other hand if they are selling a car and they don't have a title and seem a little too pushy, dont have a genuine story although i hate hearing them anyway, don't have a registration, can't show me a tax bill and just seem dishonest I don't mess with those type of deals. I haven't had anything come back to hunt me yet and this is just my crazy way of doing things don't try this at home lol.

Not in our town, our yard won't take them without a clear title in my name, cause I had to sign one off on the car I sold them.

In kansas anything older than 1985 doesn't even require titles, scrapped quite a few, and scrapped late model stuff by chopping it in half or so.

I read an article a while back about unscrupulous tow truck drivers in Kansas city that were snatching broken down vehicles along the highways that were older vehicles and taking them to crushing yards for $200 a pop. Seems that vehicles that were of a certain age were legally allowed to be scrapped without a title.
