Heat wave, just a reminder to stay hydrated

Even last week with all the rain I had one day from the humidity I suffered from heat exhaustion even though I was drinking gatorade and water.

Everyone please be careful and mindful of symptoms and carry plenty of cold hydration with you.

Today the rain is gone but I have been sweating bullets from the get go even though I'm drinking plenty of fluids. You just never can be too careful and this can sneak up on you like flies on honey!

No joking here folks. Listen to NA on this one. I had this beaten in my head when I first moved to AZ, an now living on my sandbar I still swear by it.

I know shocking but not all the cold, frosty beverages in the cooler are adult. Hydration is a good thing.

Heat stroke/exhaustion can ruin a day like nothing else. Profit is good, but your health is better.

Sirscrapalot - Not a sermon, just a thought.

Do you carry milk in the cooler?

When it gets real bad out, you need more water than gatorade, but you still need gatorade for the salts and electrolites.

DO NOT drink soda on a day like that, it can kill you. It takes roughly twice the amount of water as the soda you drink just to break even on the water used to digest it.

    Sort of off topic...

Speaking of not enough room in a cooler - this is what I have done a couple times for very large groups of people where there is no refrigeration available.

I have a commercial chest freezer, and made a whole bunch of ice blocks by putting plastic bags inside cardboard boxes. Instead of using a whole bunch of coolers, I just put the freezer in the bed of my truck, and kept the ice blocks in it. Fill with your favorite beverages, and enjoy!

You can also just use a chest freezer as a cooler, and buy bulk ice. They should have a drain at the bottom to get rid of water as the ice melts.

    I can appreciate that.
Here in Louisiana is hot and humid for the greater part of year and from June - Sept its beyond hot and humid..
I always keep a a dozen or bottles on my cooler sometimes warm usually cold but it makes not difference..
    Long as its wet...

I got hit by dehydration last week.

I'd not been drinking nearly as much water as I should have, was working all different hours & walking back & forth to my scrapping area (10 blocks from home) & home. I'd also double dosed my 50mg Amitriptyline over (6 hours apart, not the 12 it should be).
Then I carried my scrap to the scrappers (3/4hr walk) brought & ate some chips & walked to a internet place.
Sitting there for a 2 hrs & suddenly didn't feel right, stood up & bam, hit the deck, ended up getting a ambulance to A&E etc.

Today, I put some slightly damp shirts in a baggie and put them in the freezer to change into when stripping the latest sweat soaked one off.

I also rolled ice cubes in a bandana and wore that on my head to keep my head cool.

I would take it off every so often to swipe my neck and arms and then put it back on my head. I started with good sized cubes and it helped soooo much!

It's not enough to drink water or other non- calorie fluids if you are not eating adequately. Food makes your body release insulin which helps you retain fluids. Otherwise, a lot of the liquid just gets excreted.
Also - I haven't tried these- but they have these special little towels that athletes use that are supposed to keep you a lot cooler. You get them wet and put them around your neck.

UGH.... soooooo glad August is nearly over. This month the wunderground.com weather station nearest my house recorded:

A whopping 0.04" of rain TOTAL.

31 of 31 days with highs over 90°
26 of 31 days with highs over 95°
21 of 31 days with highs over 100°
7 of 31 days with highs over 105°

Overnight lows didn't really provide true relief, either:
    9 of 31 nights lows over 80°
    23 of 31 nights lows over 75°
Just three nights registered lows down into the 60s, and I dam sure don't remember them! LOL

I am ready for fall. Weather girl said we had 15 or so days of heat over 100. Then the miserable heat well into the night with lows in the 70s by morning.

July 1st was 110. I vividly recall that day as I was headed to a dr's appt, flying down the highway at 80, windows down and zero relief. Then I realized I wasn't sweating...so I stopped off for a Gatorade.
