Just a stubborn old goat

Well, not this time. LOL
I have this thing about stripping wire no matter what if it’s heavy enough. Well this time I got a little POed because the insulation was real tough PVC and even a new utility blade wouldn’t touch it.
Now here is the stubborn old goat part.
This wire was aluminum elec. Service lines. Not worth the time to strip but this stuff ticked me off . I am not one to be defeated by some ……of scrap.
So I got serious with it.

I made a makeshift table.

Stretched the wire out thinking of a chicken neck,


Gave it a good wack but went a little to deep.



Now is this a little overkill for stripping wire or what.

If you can find an effective and fairly quick way to take off the heavy insulation and remove the steel wire core of ACSR (I think its either 5 or 6 Al strands around the single steel one?), it might be worth it. My non-ferrous guy is giving 56 cents for clean Al wire compared to a quarter a pound for ACSR

Then again the heavy insulation is about what, 40% of the weight?? If so 100 lbs. of straight ACSR would get ya $25 and 60 pounds of clean wire would yield $33.60. So the exact percentage of the insulation probably becomes fairly significant (and how fast the steel core strand can be removed). Good luck on whatever you do!!

This wire didn’t have the center steel wire. It was 7 stands of 12 gauge Al only.
Printed on the insulation: (ALCAN B 2 AWG AL XLPE 600V
I only stripped about 35 feet to see if my planer would strip that nasty PVC. It worked OK but if I every use it again for stripping heavy insulation it will be for COPPER wire on a longer 2x10x12 board at least.
From the 35’ of Al wire I stripped I ended up with 2.5 pounds at .55 for clean EC Aluminum.
The rest of the wire is going in as Insulated!!!!!!

Still as much as I've reduced coated wire to just CU or AL , The planer is an excellent idea , little depth gage adjustment and it's the best idea yet , heck you know how many doors I planed in my life & your idea never occurred to me .

Abuilder Fine Idea , hats off to you . I don't think it's over kill at all . Heck a low cost Harbor freight Planer will do fine .
the only draw back is keeping mess down as wood chips are biodegradable and casing chips are not .

As to steel core - once stripped cut at lengths of 2 or 3 foot then it's easy enough to untwist
I guess you could cut them at 2 or 3 foot first then watch your hands careful as you use planer on the workable sizes

I called it overkill because of the size & weight of my planer. My planer is a Rockwell 653 versa planer, the Cadillac of door planers in it’s day. A smaller planer would have been a lot easier to handle that’s for sure. But without the horsepower and carbide blade I think a HF planer would self destruct if the blade got bound up in the wire.

ya once I got tired of doing it by hand for most of my life I bought a electric stripper a few years ago now and it paid for itself in just a month or so and it eats it faster than I can supply it lol

ACSR is not usually insulated. It is the bare overhead primary wire. The triplex, etc. secondary or service wire does not need the steel reinforcement wire as the spans involved are generally shorter than primary. (I purchase for an electric cooperative.)

I had some wire similar to that but was finally able to remove the insulation with a knife but it was still hard to do.
