A Day in the Life of a High School Scrapper

Hello everyone. I'M FREAKING OUT OVER HERE! Scored a huge job for me at a church barn sale that has me up to my eyes in scrap, great thing but school is here now and I need help! I have to write a informative speech 5-7 minutes, at first it was going to be about the Great Barrier Reef, but I changed my mind and wanted to talk about Scrapping. I could talk about it for 5-7 minutes from my own knowledge but the problem is the teacher is demanding 5 sources! So I need help trying to find some reputable sources. I also need to have 3 in speech citations.

I know, I know not the place to help with homework but I'm drowning over here. Its just hard to find sites that talk about scrap that are not just gibberish and advertisement. I'd really appreciate any help I could get.

P.S Not asking for someone to write this speech just looking for sources.

Yea, the only thing his I can't do a report. So she wants it to be a current thing, so history is not gonna do it. I could write this whole speech but if I don't have quotes there is no point

There is plenty of discussion here of current scrap market situations to speak for hours.

So research some sources about the drop in metal prices, or the closing of scrap yards, mills or mines in your area. Or even if your household recycling place is having problems disposing stuff due to prices. You will figure it out and I am sure do well...

A Day in the Life of a High School Scrapper

with the internet and digital becoming a larger part of our everyday life, requirements for sources are every changing. can you post what the requirements for sources, so we can guide you?

patriot had at least 3 threads that may qualify. they document his progress from newbie scrapper to running job sites.

Actually, message him, maybe he will help out some. He is a great guy if you take the time to chat
Currently looking for a job in or related to scrap/recycling. Relocation is possible for the right offer.

The two best quotes on the forum in my opinion are Sledges and Ecosafe's. If you want to put your teacher on her head, tell her an ex-principal with a doctorate degree quit education five years before full retirement to scrap full time. As Matt in the Hat stated I started on this forum as a newbie and have evolved to scrapping power plants. water tanks and everything in between.

I spent seven years in college to earn my degrees and spent three years learning through the school of hard knocks to earn more money, more freedom, and more satisfaction. The school of hard knocks included plenty of insight from this forum. I loved teaching, but love what I do now more. Ask your teacher if she would give up the comfort of her present position to be happier with her life. Not many will make the jump, but I did and will never regret the decision. Yes, you can quote me.

If you need documentation of my story, PM me and I will provide my cell phone number and your teacher can call me to verify the value of a scrappers lifestyle.

get on some of the sites for news and technical journals, you don't have to pay, just read the executive summary and pull quotes from there.

look for trade journals in metal recycling, that kind of thing.

also go here ISRI - Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries Inc pull quotes from the various press releases.

do you need to source in APA format? if not, you may get some bonus points, again this will be required in college and grad school...

this will be good training for college if you don't want to be scrapping forever...

remember, connect with audience, tell them what you're going to say, say it, then tell them what you said...

I agree with Tim, we just talked about that big recycler out East going bankrupt with a link to the article.
I'm sure there's more like that available. Spell out what your needing for info and Google that and usually something will come up.

I need to brag a little cause I'm very proud, not cause I was any help with this one. My youngest daughter went thru speech writing and delivering and did so well in class that her teacher put her in a competition against the whole school. She won that hands down and then was entered into a 7 college speech competition with Notre Dame being one of them. She won that one also and made it onto the dean's list for the year. I was strutting around the house here like a big Banty rooster.

Mechanic, when I was in grad school I won a national award from the American Chemical Society for research involving replacing hydrogen atoms in organic planar substances and my Father and my Grandfather told everyone they possibly could about it. They're not the type of men that convey feelings so it meant the world to me that they were so obviously proud of me. I'm tearing up just thinking about it. Hearing my Mother tell me about them bragging was easily one of the happiest moments of my life..... ya know aside from getting married and everything............ Anywho, I know your daughter appreciates your bragging just as much as I did. sorry for the tangent.
