you all ever get this response from a CL ad listing??

A first for me. I'm trying to sell some freezer baskets out of our old frig that crapped out on us and got this reply from an e-mail that says "Lily...." but is signed "Amanda":

hey I saw your post on craigslist and I wanted to know if you wanted to text? I'm a bored college girl trying to make extra money to help me with my tuition and I'm just trying to find ways to make money. You can completely ignore this email if you want but text me if you want to chat?? my number is 4253338994 OR just add me on google hangouts! thanks xoxo Amanda

Yeah, right. I think she wants to earn more of her "tuition" money off of me (and probably not from learning how to re-sell things...)

Yes I have. I recently had a post in the Free section and the first person to reply wasn't interested in the item in the ad. She was wanting something else.

While staying at a hotel once I received a call from a woman wanting to talk to John. I told her "wrong number" and then she wanted to know if I was lonely.

I told her that I was not and if I did become lonely I was capable of taking care of it myself for free.

Childhood Dream- No, the vast majority of my experiences on CL have been very nice in getting deals done. This is why this was unusual but then again, I live in a medium-small metro that is pretty family orientated. I'm sure I could find various types of trouble if I went looking but again, I'd have to go looking.

That's what they want you to do: Respond. Now they have your email address and they can sell it to spammers. Live and learn, I guess.

But, he didn't respond. If I understood correctly, I think it was a cold call of sorts- to a hotel number???

I'd just ignore this "Amanda" person completely.

I'd be surprised if she was real.. Most likely a scammer. They seem to be based out of non-English speaking countries a lot. If you get a email that has odd grammar errors or is overly "British English" they are scammers. Feel free to curse them or make fun of Mohammad... (That really irks them) all they want is a money order. Another common one is that they say they are in the military and are shipping stateside soon. Hence they need a car... Super scam.. You can trip them up with a mos question pretty easy. The joys of Craig's pissed... All in all it's worked well for me.

No they don't know my e-mail address. This came through the CL system which I take is blind to them until I respond. Hence, the need for me to text or call "her". Bored college girl my a@@!!

It was a lot worse back before CL instituted their blind email system. I would get crazy emails that would bait me into replying and then they had all of the information they needed for some serious spam. I learned to recognize messages from bots pretty quickly. The easiest is when they do not mention the item you have in the body of the message. Anytime you get a message like "do you still have it" without mentioning what "it" is, just delete it...

Hahaha that number's local to me, Whitepages says it's based in Carnation WA, a semi rural farmland town in a flood plain.

I get scammers often. If they say will give you "extra money" to hold, and will have a "mover" come pick up, ignore...

Soobthang- Its a small world. I ate lunch one time in Carnation, WA while on a work field trip about 10 years ago and recently (last half of the year) had a ebay customer there. As about as aggie as it gets in the Puget Sound area south of Seattle from what I saw...

I'm selling a truck right now...

    50% is straight up scams
25% is super ultra lowballers wondering how desperate I am for 25% of what I'm asking
20% are real customers that have money and want to talk to me about the truck. Then i find out that they don't read very well, they also don't see very well. They find things they don't like, most of which are clearly documented in the ad. These people rarely show up to actually look at the truck
5% show up with cash, ready to rock and roll.

I easily talk to 20 people selling stuff like beat up old trucks.

At the same time..I've sold lawnmowers, at full price, to the first person that called/emailed/texted me.

I love CL, and I've been on the internet for 15 years of my 26 years of life. I can smell a scam a mile away. I pay them no mind at all. I just move on to the next contact.

One time I needed a transmission for a '72 Chevy 1/2 Ton. Posted an ad with the title "Tranny needed". The results were not good.
