A good load in the middle of a dry spell

I decided to post this story here rather than tagging along on Phil's thread. It was a good Saturday.
I went to a community yard sale style giveaway Sat. to see if there was anything I couldn't live without.
This year it was being held indoors and they were using a big office bldg. that was closed down. There was 12 clothing racks packed full of clothes plus shoes, and 3 rows of tables about 60' ft long of all sorts of yard sale merchandise all for free (but no resellers). I got a couple of items for the house and when I got ready to leave I approached the couple of gentleman that put it all together. This was an effort of a community church (members and friends) to put all their leftovers in one place for one day.

I handed out a few cards explaining who I was and how I scrapped and recycled also. I told them if there was anything metal or anything that plugged in or ran on batteries that I would be happy to haul it away for free so they didn't have to haul it back home. About 2 pm I get a call from the main man asking if I could come over. They mentioned a few items that I knew would fit in the car so I get over there and a few items had grown into almost a carload. Then they started dragging out the larger stuff like a swivel computer chair, a broken jumpy horse, a home made (nice) end table with metal upright legs, an older swim lounger with the styrofoam around it. Basically anything that had metal in or on it was mine.

I take the loaded car home and get the truck (which already had a freezer on it) and go back (it's only 2 mile away) and I ended up filling up the truck also before we were all done. I made a last pass thru and 2 guys following and anything I pointed to they grabbed and out the door they went. I also got 2 printers, 1 scanner, a wireless router, internet phone, almost new roll of solid core phone wire.

They were very happy and I made some new friends (clients) and that we can never have enough of. Today was spent breaking down a lot of stuff a making a shred pile in the bed of the truck. Brought in a few items to break down for the boards. I spotted one item that I will will take pictures of while breaking down. It's an old Phillips Lifeline ('09 model) base unit that calls in in case of an emergency, never had one of those. This was very welcome in a dry spell.

Sweet, Mech! Right now I'm welcoming this dry spell as it's "winter proofing the house" time. Although, I wouldn't protest to a nice score like that.

Congrats on your score. You have brought hope and motivation to many on the forum. The physical benefits are secondary only to the friends and contacts you have made. The dividends in the future will be huge. I smell a new thread, "Mech new friends and what they bring to the table."
Give back more to this world than we take.

I thought I'd continue on with this thread (cause I'm too lazy to find the other one) and tell you how this Saturday went.
I had a truckload of misc. metal, freezer and other tin, steel, from the giveaway. 445 lb of it. Went to my scrapyard where I used to buy computers as their the same price as the other one on steel/tin mix. This one takes the refrig.freezers as is and they pull the Freon and compressor.

Casually asked the owner what he was wanting for his computers he'd been stockpiling. His answer was .20 lb and I'm like "I'm not sure it'll get there for the next two years". We talked about the state of affairs (scrap yard wise) and I came back with "I offered .10 last month and now I might be able to do .12 a lb. He was happy to help me load my truck with about 565 lb of computers. My first one tore down was a Pent.2. I know .12 is a little high but if it keeps me in the game then I just tighten up my belt a little tighter and try for a little more resale.
Here's the small load. (about 26 computers)

Little different view; notice the nicer plexiglass cover on the case.I'll try to sell that one empty to a builder.

Here's a close up of it, haven't tore into it yet.

Here is what I have so far as far as "bling"

The small yard in Syracuse is open from 9-2 on Sat's but when snow flies then it'll be one a month.
    Don't know about Rochester.

    Nice.

Hopefully the older PC's will have some ceramic processors, large socket mother boards and lots of PCI boards.

Just opened one up, nothing looked special. After I got done I looked at the 4 sticks of memory, 2 one gigs and 2 two gigs of memory.
Double checked the AMD chip and the 'net shows it to be a quad core. No physical damage to the motherboard, why would someone throw it away.

... hard drive crapped out and someone just bought a whole new tower? Some people are just lazy or ignorant.

Ummm ... nice find on the quad core !

I've only run across a couple of quads. Both machines had been used for gaming and had some nice high end parts. The problem for the serious gamers is that they are hungry for the latest tech so that they can stay competitive. They might spend a couple of grand on a high end computer that will be obsolete for their purposes in a couple of years.

You might check the memory that came with the quad. If it's running pc-2 8500 -or- pc-2 6400 it's a fairly old machine. If it's running pc-3 memory it's a bit more current.

I know a guy like that, I have a machine I traded parts for that when he built it he said it cost him around 4000. I thought he might have been fibbing or stretching it a little till I seen it. I've never seen a computer that big and not be a server. The power supply is a 1500 with a hyper threaded quad core, overclocked. I traded for it but don't have the room or the electric supply for it. Heck the case is about 4' tall.

The case with the plexi glass cover, I have one that looks almost identical to it, except it's red. It actually has one of those water cooling systems in it. Check for that, it may have a good value. And were the gold capped cpu's from a slot processer?

Those gold topped ones came from a couple of old XP machines

It's nothing to compare to that, but i had a nice Gateway tower come in last month. They had just upgraded it to windows 7 before deciding that it just wasn't up to the task anymore. That quad core with what was a high end video card of it's day handles some of the tasks in my shop that will cause my other lighter/faster machines to crash. It's a real workhorse.

Just a couple of things to look for:

Check the ribbon cables that go from the motherboard up to the hard drive & cd/dvd drive. If they're wide and grey it's a pretty old machine and should probably go to scrap. If the cables are narrower and red, blue,or orange there might e a prospect of selling it for more than just scrap value.

The slot processors fit into a slot on the motherboard just like the sticks of RAM memory do. They're long and narrow and usually say Pentium II or Pentium III on them. You'll know em' when you see em' cause they're quite different from the square processors that have all those little gold colored pins sticking out underneath.
