    Big Telecom Scrapping With Photos

I am scrapping a lot of old telephone server stuff lately. I have taken some pictures along the way. This is a big job for me and I will take pictures. I am going to be dealing with a lot of different boards and I will try to share them with you as I go along and discover different boards. I have some of the stuff now and will be getting in the a truck load Thursday. This project also includes some radio controller stuff too. I have dismantled one and it has 20+ lbs of aluminum heat sinks and 100+ screws. I do have a interesting silver boards in this unit that I am still looking into.

If anyone has seen these silver looking boards before I would thank you ahead of time for a heads up as to what they are. I am going to be dealing with the boards from this project with one of our own buyers from here on the forum. We have already spoke to one another.

Here are some pictures of the radio controller unit.

    1) The first picture is of the radio controller units in their racks.

    2) This picture is of the controller unit opened up in the front.

    3) This is the heat sink on the unit. It has 28 screws securing it to the controller.

    4) This is the front of the board under the heat sink. Whatever the silver base metal is on the board is VERY thick. You can literally feel the thickness with your finger nail.

    5) Here is the back of the same board. Notice the pools of metal.

    6) Here is a close up of the same board on the back side better showing the puddles of the metal coating.

The next few pictures will be of a few random boards. I will number each in case anyone wants to reference any of them in their comments.

    7)

    8)

    9)

    10)

I would like to hear your opinion about the board that was under the heat sink. I can't figure out why there was such a serious heat sink. What do you think the base metal, (silver looking metal) is?
There may a million better places to live than Iowa, but none of them are home!

Nice pick up....that board with the large sink on it, can you post a pic of it on its side.

I don't have a picture of it on it's side, but it is about the thickness of a regular board. I did see that I did not put up the close-up and instead repeated another picture. I will put the close-ups here now.

1a) Close-up of right 1/2 of the front of the board

    2a) Left 1/2 of front.

    3a) Back right.

4a) Back left. Here you can really get a feel for the pools of metal.

I will try to get a picture from the side out at my other shop later.

The only thing I have to ad is you might check these transistors for gold plating, the board is the right era for them to use them. The one pic even looks like it could be.

I removed one of them from the board. It is in fact plated copper. Very thickly plated I might add. It does look like gold plating.

Does anyone know what these boards grade as? Also, does anyone know what kind of metal coating this board has? Is it silver?

It certainly is very thick in places.

These are some close-up pictures of the piece. The key is for size comparisons.

i think the silver coating would need be a non-conductive material, else how could it be covering the entire board

One of your first pics #10 has a Nortel chip, have you considered looking up a Nortel person? (there are several threads about the worth/value/want for nortel products/phones/systems)
Also, it appears to be on a CPU board, and i'd recommend researching it. Under that heatsink is (my guess) a CPU, and the board, if these type units are still in use elsewhere, might have much more value as a standby/upgrade/replacement unit

I certainly see your point Bear, but my Wife just used her continuity tester and it certainly is conductive metal. On the front of the board the individual circuits are isolated by clean tracks. The backside of the board is totally conductive though. There is on small isolated area in the back that is not coated, but rather has isolated tracks also.

on that nortel board i'll bet when you pull it there will be two long rows of gold pins on each side
