Question Car radios: boards + optical drives + displays

Hi all! Been browsing this forum for a few months and finally signed up.

So my question revolves around boards/components from car radios, predominately aftermarket.
All my search queries turn up CD drives from computers and radios not from cars.
Are the boards and such in these units worth anything?

I get them all from my employer. Our only offer from e-scrap places in the state topped out at a whopping $.012/lb... yes that's 1.2 pennies.
We do nothing with these, they have no resale value for us.

I don't care about tear down time, I'm trying to kick the habit of my username... which is work drink sleep... occasionally fish, which includes more drinking.
So if the boards and scrap are worth anything I have about 300+ car radios I can take home and pull apart.
Then I save money and make money. A double return!

I took some time to half pull one apart because I have limited tools at my desk. Forgive me if I bork the photos.

    **Changed links.
    **Again
Someone remind me to never ever do this at work again ... what a headache

    1. Underside of optical drive where board is + connection ribbon

    2. Display panel and control board

    3. Various shots of mainboard

    4. Small board on side (cover turned out to be soldered in)

    5. Non-magnetic heatsink (I'm assuming it's a heatsink, on other radios it has fins). These vary by finish. Some look like cast (this one) others look milled/cnc'd (shiny finish)

Yea that's what I figured. Dagnabbit. Even though the settings are "ANYONE - DOES NOT REQUIRE SIGN IN" they would only show up if I signed into a google account.

When I get home I'll upload them to Imgur and replace the links. Can't get on Photo hosting from work.

I see it, um, I can't really tell what kind of boards those are, I'm pretty sure they're mid grade, but im still new at the board grading part of ewaste. I mean by all means if you have the supply I'd do it, something to do at night, and then you can make a bit of money!

Yea I don't really know diddly about grading e-waste. I've only ever done straight metals. Cu/Pb/Fe/etc.
Speaking of which... I need to find a place up here to turn in my couple hundred pounds of wheel weights I've been collecting.

Remove the metal casings of course, then send a few photos to buyers your interested in. We can all tell you what we"d grade them as but at the end of the day it"s your buyer's thought that counts the most.

If your getting them free, then even as mid grade it'd be worth it, lest to me. Tween the casing for the boards, an the boards themselves (assuming mid-grade at worse) then you should do well. Might find some contain high grade ones, an some mid, etc. Lots of makes an models out there specially in the after market stereo's. If I had that contact I'd be profiting.

Good luck an let us know what you finally find out from your buyer.

I don't have any buyers right now! lol

I've only just decided to get into this because seriously drinking 3-4 cases of High Life a week sitting around doing nothing after work has been a bit of a drain on my wallet and my liver.
I figured I have access to these, might as well get into it.
All else I've ever really done is in the summer pulling wire and harvesting wheel weights at junk yards.

There's a couple members on here not too far from me.
Maybe ScrapperSkip or Armygreywolf wouldn't mind trading some knowledge for free labor or... some nice things.

There are many buyers right here on the forums if you can't find something to work locally.

Just read the reviews, send them some photos, get your answers an go from there. It's as easy as that.

Good luck an let us know how it works for you.

I'd say the boards are mid grade (they vary from low to hi-mid)(.50 to 1.50 lb) with the heat sinks on the back and motors (if easy to get out) and boards you might have some decent money there. If their brown/green then you would have low grade worth about .15 - .25 a lb.

I pulled a few apart in my sparetime today. 90% of these are Pioneer, Alpine, Kenwood, Sony. A few junk dvd players and then junk OE parts.

The 5 I took apart all were green on both sides. For all boards. Some had way fewer chips and such on them. Ones with more functionality especially the ones with built-in HD tuners had more. I have all the time in the world. My username is about 99.9% representative of my day to day. Its only DSR for weekends lol.

I have a couple of the DC converters from hybrids too. Cant wait to pop those open.

By "all boards" I meant the display and opti drive boards too.

I like your name by the way. Spend enough time around the forums an you'll understand.

Keep posting those pics of the boards as you can please, I for one am interested in them. Never know maybe someday I'll find a contact with similar product. So you'll be helping us out with reporting back on your results an all the good stuff you lean about them.

you can ebay them as-parts / not working if theyre broken, $10-$20 each, cost $5 to ship in flat rate envelopes, so you could make $5-$15 each on broken units thats better than $1 in scrap, if theyr complete and might work id sell them as used, untested in description
I buy and sell all types of scrap and escrap. I buy specialty and hard to sell escrap. I buy resale items. PM me or contact me at jghilino@hotmail.com

Would you like me to come out and have a look next week? Worst thing that could happen is shred price (about ten cents a pound) The motherboard of the radio is chinese even if it's colored green meaning it's the same as low grade mobo...maybe not quite without the gold contacts and such. The logic boards for the drive are worth something in most cases...but these are minus the pinouts so I can't say for sure. Sure are excellent candidates for depopulation of the ICs and ta caps (I saw a few in those pics).

That's assuming non-working units...as stated above if it works it's worth more than scrap unless its obselete...CDs aren't quite obselete yet.

Labor is the issue, how long did it take you to break down one of those. Theres a reason I don't break down ECMs...they are very high quality boards but can take an hour to bake them and pry them out of the glue in the case.

There's other things at your yard I'd pay for that they just destroy on a whim. The ECM connectors I will pay for...varies by manufacturer but there's that. In the first gen ON Star GM cars 2001-2005 the unit in the trunk is worth something. Don't forget the lead wheel weights. On 2nd/3rd and 4th gen 60 degree v6 GM cars the upper intake manifold is seriously easy to remove (less than 30 seconds with cordless impact) and is an easy 7 lbs of cast aluminum...what else...oh right R134a recovery. The stuff is worth nearly 10 bucks a pound right now so there's no reason to NOT sell it.
