    telecom servers?

Threw an add out to buy ewaste the other day and Got a text from a guy lookin to sell some "servers". I ask for model #s and what not and he sends me pictures. Looks like racks of telecom boards? Iv never seen this kinda set up nor do I know what its value would be and what to offer.

Iv tried searching but couldnt really find anything similar to what this guys offering me. Hes also willing to drop the stuff off. I'll upload a few pics.

Any idea as to what a safe number would be to offer? I'm pretty comfortable with making offers computer scrap but telecom kinda throws me for a loop still.

Theres a few pics of just a bunch of telecom wiring (the really thin telephone wire) and power supplies that I didnt include. I can put a value on that kinda stuff.
If I didn't have bad luck, I'd have no luck at all...

Telecom boards generally sell for $3 to $6 per pound (US)
Check the racks to see if they are mostly aluminum or tin
That should point you in the right direction

There will be a fair amount of peripheral grade boards in those slots, pay accordingly.

I have no idea what these things even weigh all together. Neither does he. That doesnt help things.

The board leaning in the top photo is not worth much BUT the one in the last photo is high grade Telecom.
The last photo is the type of board I had in this post. http://www.scrapmetalforum.com/gener...tml#post203107
Have you found a good buyer in Canada or will you have to ship to the US?

I've bought some of these for 15-20 cents per pound and have done pretty well on them. The thicker pieces on the ends of each rack row are going to be power supplies also. I can't get more than 15 cents per pound for those near me so I have to be careful when buying.

The cards themselves can weigh from a half pound to 3/4 of a pound for those large ones so you can do a quick count and calculate from there. They are easy to remove and you can usually sell them as is unless there are some heavier transformers that you need to pull off. Brackets I've left on mine were ok. The backplanes are the ones that are work to get out and end up almost not worth the effort, but I hate to leave them in the rack.

You need to feel him out...........does he just need to get rid of it?????..........It has some value but its scrap unless you feel like trying to look up all the part# on EBAY...........Some of that stuff has re-sell value but unless you know what your doing it's scrap (I don't have a clue I would scrap those units)............Ask him what he will take for them and make him establish a price.............If not I would go look at it (if not to far away) and shoot him a fair scrap offer based on the weight of the item..........Try to pick the item up (Most scrappers can dead lift at least 75LBS...........So if you can't move it then you know it weighs at least 100lbs.............Let us know how it goes

    I would say .15 per pound is a fair price..........So if said item weighs 100lbs =$15.........200lbs =$30 ETC....ETC...........

I'm with Mike on this one. Feel him out because if he is willing to bring them to you, he is not sitting back waiting for a sucker. He wants them gone. If you throw a guesstimate at the weight and offer him a price per lb, you might be overshooting yourself. But for all you know, he is looking for slightly less than resale value. He may be looking for $200-$300 out of it, while you are looking to pay $30-$50 or so. Or, he may just want $20 to pay for the gas he used to bring it to you. All depends on his intent and attitude towards it.

Agreed, my price per pound is only if you have scales handy. The telecom boards sell at premium scrap prices, but their weight is small compared to the total rack weight.

I've processed some that were similar to them. On the ones I had, most of the cases were sheet iron, but a few were aluminum. Those look like sheet iron. Also, the brackets on those boards are most likely aluminum. Check with your buyer to see if they want them on or off. Those brackets weigh less than the metal brackets we are used to.

On the boards, about 1/4 to a 1/3 of them will be high grade telecom. About 1/2 of them will be a version of mid-grade. I had processors in the batch I processed on one board per horizontal rack. The other 1/4 of the boards will be power supply boards. The nice thing on big loads like this is when you get them, the processing time just gets faster. What I did was put three boxes on the floor and just pack them straight out of the rack. Only handle them once!

I hope this helps. I'm looking forward to hearing how this turns out...two samples of similar material is better than one!

    Best,

    Mud

Thanks for all the input guys. Iv offered him .15/lb so we'll see how it goes. If he declines the offer I may bump up a few cents only cause he would be delivering them.

I'll let y'all know how it goes!

Theres a buyer 20 mins from me that offer comparable prices to the buyers on the forum, but they have a minimum weight you need to bring in for them to be interested. Shouldnt be too hard to save up enough and would be well worth it

Paying him $0.11lb or whatever your getting a pound for light iron will be a safe number. That way its a no lose buy.

If it was me, and it was close enough to look at, I would see how many of the boards look like the last photo. From what I can tell it's Nortel equipment and the 31 Nortel cards I had weighed over 40 pounds and I got $180 for them. 1 board was low grade and the rest paid $4.20 to $5 a pound.

Thats exactly why I told him my offer would still be good later on. Iv dealt with BSers. Had a laptop deal a while back that i made a thread on. Made an offer and he said naah his buddy offered him $$$ I said ok no problem thanks for your time. "Ohhh well you're here now so ok $ you offered is fine" Im holdin firm at 0.15#, whether hes BSing or not. I wont be shocked if he gets back to me in a couple days.
