Telephone Board

Hey guys, I took apart a Polycom telephone yesterday and had a question about the board. What is under the big aluminum heat sink that's soldered to the board?

Thanks Hobo, but that wasn't exactly the one I found...and I don't want to destroy the board by taking it apart. I'm just curious.

It isn't a problem if the board ends up in two pieces. Just grab that piece of tin with a pliers and give it a yank. Or take a wood chisel and tap thru the metal pieces that are soldered to the board to get it off.

That's not a heat sink it's a shield, like the ones you see on cell phone boards. Grab a corner with some side cutters and open it up like a sardine can.

Yeah, if its soldered on, its probably steel, Check it with a magnet.

It will be RF shielding and there will probably be some sensitive device under it. A chip or oscillator.
Since if its Steel metal, I get the impression that it should be removed before escrap sale.
