Ouch! Been there done that recently with my S10 (while unloading nonetheless, not loading or transporting go figure), thankfully I have glass coverage otherwise I would have been out almost $200. I wedge some old seat cushions from some aluminum-framed yard chairs someone gave to me on CL between the load and my back window currently. I don't plan on doing it that way forever, I am looking to build some wooden sides for the truck, including having a plank to protect the back window.
that cross plank is just natural for holding the sides up in place, maybe use a lower and upper with a peep hole in between
I made mine easy on/off, with only one cross member, covering most of the window, i keep it put up and hardly ever use it because the toolbox has to come off to use the mounting holes in side of the truck bed
