Van
Car + Trailer
I know, but notice how i said a 150 (or any half ton im a ford guy) or a ranger? It doesn't matter what size your truck is, you can put walls on a ranger, a half ton, 3/4 ton, or 1 ton IT DOESNT MATTER! Stop being so technical. I figured you were smart enough to figure out the point I was trying to get across, and provide a picture to illustrate my comment.
why is it only this forum that you guys get so bent out of shape over nothing?
TRUCK.... you can haul a heavier trailer with a truck. plus a truck is a good place to start because you stack stuff a couple feet over the cab of the truck when you need to.

but the higher you go the more you get pullled over for some reason. I've been shopping around for small bin trucks lol

I would say go with a medium duty truck. Cost is half of a pickup (tabs, insurance, ect.) and trailer and a lot less maintenance
3/4 Ton or 1 Ton Cargo van with Hitch - Turbo Diesel = Better but anything works as long as your making money. This way you get the best of both worlds!
Just my .02
I'm not sure of other small trucks but the Dodge Dakota I had couldn't haul much. I put just a tab under a 1/4 bed worth of stone in mine and it was on the axles.
my advice, get a small truck!!! you will not regret it! my little mazda 4x4 gets about 19 in town 23 highway if you baby it.....I am in mn so i need the 4x4 but I had a 2wd version of the same truck that got 20ish mpg in town. For the versatility a little truck gives you, I could not imagine not having one, and it saves you a lot of time packing vs a car or van, depending on what you scrap, get a small truck, mazda b series, ranger, s 10, tacoma, a little truck will never do you wrong!
