    flat bed or goose neck

    well with what I want to do, being more with cars and trucks and just generally grow as a scrapper I was considering putting a 5th wheel/ goose neck hitch in my truck, this would result in me getting a trailer to fit the bill. (keep in mind these are future plans, I'm not running out tomorrow and getting anything new). I would also be able to get campers and other trailers that require this hitch and haul heavier loads to the yard. the though crossed my mind that maybe I should just get a flatbed truck to make getting car very easy, I would probably use it for more then just cars since it would have a higher gvw then my pickup. the down side with getting a new truck is more cost. I'll have gas and maintenance that I would have with just another trailer. so I guess what I want to know is what is a better move? what do you guys use? and how hard would it be to put a 5th wheel hitch in my truck haha

    5th wheel hitch is very easy to install. Basicaly your drilling holes threw the bed into the fram then using bolts to secure the rails to the frame. I did mine in about an hour. Only took so long because I had to cut around my bed liner. Still need to get a spray in. Now in my opinion you may want to go the gooseneck route with a flip up ball in the bed. I have both in my truck. If you decide to get a 5th wheel trailer they sell adapters now to fit the gooseneck ball.

    Keep in mind that there is a big difference between a farmers - a truckers - and a camper 5th wheel.
    Those are all different.

    camper;

    ranch 5th wheel;

    Semi 5 wheel;

    now I thought there was a difference with a ball or a slider, would you say the ball is a better way to go? I would like to still use my bed

    1956; if you were to have one over the other you said you'd take the 5th wheel right? thats what I was thinking I just didn't know if a flat bed would be easier, also did you have to remove the freon from those a/c's?

    The farmers style (ball) recesses down into the bed but the camper style you can pull the center plate to use the bed.
    My older style 5th wheel in my duellie had bars the went over the rear fenders and the actual 5th wheel fastened to it. That way I could pull the 5th wheel and the main bed was opened up for use.

    well my future plans include getting a 1 ton dually, I'd probably put the 5th wheel in that but we'll see what the future hold, right now I'll get between 11 and 12 when pulling a decent load

    Why not go with a gooseneck trailer ? With a 2 5/16" ball and if you get a turnover ball, it flips unpside down with no tools in the matter of minutes. I know a true 5th wheel is rated for more with weight, but even with my ball right side up it never seems to be in the road. I've pulled my old man's 30' trailer grossing over 30k without a bit of trouble.

    A gooseneck should not change the fuel milage over a bumper pull trailer. Heck your pulling the same weight, just hitched up in a different spot. I will say a gooseneck will handle a lot smoother where a bumper type trailer beats on the back of the truck.

    B&W makes a gooseneck set up that you can add a 5th wheel to. Kinda spendy though.

    thanks all for the responds I was thinking 5th wheel from the start but just wanted to check, russell said they are more to insure and I guess with a trailer that size, being 20ft+ it would be a good idea to get insurance on it haha
