I really like the hook lift idea.

As far as my truck goes its a work in progress, fass lift pump, new injection pump, just rebulit the tranny, hd single disk tourq converter, new fuel lines, a "big honkin air filter" BHAF lol, as of next week 4" turbo back down pipe to 5" mbrp straight pipe, less restriction less heat. Just trying to build a truck that's reliable and that will work, workin on installing gauges , bost, fuel pressure, and egts. I dont recomend the hd single disk tourq converter, im not impressed with it, tripple is the w way to go

Sounds kinda retro like the Sandford & Son show with their old truck, ...I like the concept and would love to pick up an old truck of that vintage as well some day

just a normal 2000 dodge 2500 short box crew cab...the short box isn't working for me so i got a bigger trailer, then i realized its time for a dump trailer and a equipment trailer.

    [IMG][/IMG]
trailer is in need of a coat of paint and new deck boards. maybe at the end of the season i'll sand blast it and paint it. time for new tires too....it never ends need a load of ACs or something that pays well to get caught up again lol...

The perfect truck? One that doesnt cost a pile to operate...

I live quite a ways out of town so the operating cost of a truck is a big deal to me.

I've grown quite interested in the system where guys get either waste veggie oil or waste motor oil and run it in a diesel truck. There's been a few threads in SMF about this but not in any detail. I'm not sure if anyone on SMF is actually doing it.

This is NOT the same as running on bio-diesel, which is made from used veggie oil and involves some chemical reactions and fiddling around with other chemicals.

As far as I have been able to discover, the one basic thing that is the BIG DEAL about using waste oil is cleanliness: no dirt and no water in the waste oil.

This means filtering it down fine enough that bacteria have to go thru the filters single file and then centrifuging it to pull even more dirt and the remaining water out. The cleanliness is so important because of all the tight clearances in the diesel injection systems.

I understand if done right, waste oil can be used at 100% (no dilution with diesel) on a properly equipped engine. The recommendation is to start and stop on diesel and switch to straight oil once warmed up. For those who experience winter weather, the conversion needs to have heaters to warm the oil so it is nice and thin by the time it gets to the injection pump.

I bought a 2002 Ford diesel 1 ton 4x4 to use as a test bench to try it out. I need a centrifuge and they are about $1500 to buy so it will be a few months before I get into that. I'm pretty certain it will work out--I've stuck my neck out to the tune of a couple of grand for the truck!! I've taken most of my information from this source (Disclaimer: I've no connection with this guy...he has done what he writes about and his books are down to earth on the subject.)

I can't help but thinking that you guys that are scrapping cars probably give away quite a bit of oil that could cut your operating costs. And other guys who have regular routes might find free oil at the places they already stop at if they put out the word.

It might be a win-win for lots of guys.

The only downside I see is Mr. Government man wants his road tax money. I've heard that some places just ask you to submit tax for whatever mileage you drove in a year.

I sure would appreciate hearing comments and experiences people have had trying this.

    Jon.

all i know is if i were to install heaters and a second tank for waste oil i would need a mechanical injection pump. being in BC you will need a good tank heater. we used to dump fry grease and coarsen in our semi trucks once and a while...there are a couple good full time RVers that are running veg oil in their rigs and have a small mazada truck with a tanks and pumps for collection. not cheap to get set up but once you do i'm sure it would all pay for it self after a year. The commercial trucking industry is slowly moving towards natural gas, I don't really know much more then that. speaking of road tax my biz partner is a sheep farmer/ parts re builder for Cat, so when were in the feild sometimes dyed fuel ends up in my truck...no biggie

There used to be an esso station that sold dyed right at the pump. I took full advantage till the station went outta business. Lol

Lots of gas stations close to lakes sell dyed gas for boats. I buy dyed diesel at the local Esso bulk plant for my farm iron. But the savings don't amount to much.

Back when I was just starting out hauling RV's for a living, I used up all my extra money for the truck, bond, misc. chains/parts for hauling. I would go to the big local truckstop and watch for a Morgan truck (or one of the other competitors) to pull in for fuel. I would copy their DOT # off then fuel up at a tax exempt pump. When I went in to pay I would just throw the paper on the counter and the girl would copy the # off onto my receipt. I had just bought 100 gal of fuel tax exempt. Made a big difference when I was broke.
Not saying it was right, just what I had to do to get started. Stayed with hauling for about 6 years.
