I broke my 8lb and when I went down to replace the handle and found their weren't any replacements, both the guy working that department and my wife talked me into another 8lb.
Today I was hitting metal frame braces and dreaming about that 10lb one they had.
I think the next time I get another sledge hammer, it's going to be the 10lb one.
What do you guys use?

I like to tinker with all my tools and such... never used a sledge hammer on an item. A ball peen hammer? Sure. A claw hammer? Sure. A framing hammer? Sure. A sledge hammer? No. I don't like beating the hell out of stuff. It never was my forte. If it doesn't come apart with a regular hammer, I don't take it apart. I scrap it as is.

2 1/2 pound. I'm too cheap to buy bigger ones, plus I haven't needed a bigger one yet. A hatchet is next on the list.

Just remember, the lighter the sledge hammer, the more times you can manage to swing it. Repetition, in my experience, has more effect than mass.

I use a maul that I garbage-picked ironically. Found it in the trash and use it to bust up other stuff found in the trash...

I have a 6 pound maul head that is welded to a chunk of pipe about 30 inches long, I call her Percy... short for "Persuader."

16 pounder, that way i dont have to go look for a bigger hammer, with enough mass you dont need repetition

another tool you can't have too many of hammers, i have a 2 ,2 1/2,3, 4 , 8, alot of claw hammers and a masonary hammer

Yep I have many hammer sizes as well, up to and including Mjolnir, my 16 pound sledge. Make sure you get the fiberglass handles on sledgehammers, though...

I have a small little peck hammer we use at work to peck the rust and mud off water mains, a 2lb, 3lb, and 8 lb. I've got a 10lb somewhere, but I don't like it cause it has a fiberglass handle. I prefer wood. Anyway, when those hammers wont fix it, the back bucket on a New Holland 555E backhoe fixes it!

OK, I have to ask - what's the purpose of a brass hammer? It seems to me it would be too soft.
