Well I finally picked up a hitachi 6 amp angle grinder with 5 grinding wheels included and a case included! it was only 50bucks... So I also bought 2 thin straight cutoff wheels allong with 2 of the thicker slightly recessed cuttof wheels, Which ones are the best? I know the thin ones prolly because it leaves more metal but I think I could get mor life out of the thick ones. What is your preffered disc for scrapping?
My preference is the thin cutoff type. Zips through just about everything. The grinding wheel will have you spending a lot of time.

It depend on what I am doing. The thinner cutoff discs can be faster, and easier to use on smaller material (like 1/4" round rod) but also are consumed faster. The slightly thicker cutoff wheels last a lot longer. Just be careful to not confuse the grinding wheels for the slightly thicker cutoff wheels.
Also, be very careful with an angle grinder. I'm not going to tell you to keep all the guards in place, because that is a choice that you have to make for yourself, but an angle grinder can get away from you in a heart beat. Maybe it will just wrap itself up in your shirt, or maybe you'll have cool scars from it. It is like any other tool, dangerous in the hands of the inattentive or fools.

Agreed. I keep the guard in place and only use proper, high-quality wheels. But I'll often set the grinder on its back, and run tubes or wire along it to remove aluminum sheet or insulation. A couple times, my hand got too close to the wheel and I'd scrape the knuckle on my thumb. Didn't do much, but reminded me of how quick it could do some real damage.Originally Posted by Rowdy

WellI almost had a bad situation today, The ultrathin wheels dont fit on my grinder! so no harm though just took it off and put on a thicker cutoff wheel, works great and is allot of fun!
That's what I thought when I got my grinder. Then a fellow member pointed out that I need to take the bushing off and turn it around.

Ohh I see. I will have to try that tomorrow, I will be gutting some stuff. Also My grinder came with 5 cheap grinding wheels, will those cut metal alright?

Well I read the manual and it only works with depressed center discs.
That sucks. After using a depressed wheel for awhile and then going to a cutoff, my work is so much easier. Can you return/exchange for a model that takes both wheels?

Well I have depressed center cutoff wheels anyway they work good.

I like the thin Dewalt or Gatorblade cutoff wheels, for my 4.5 inch angle grinder.

I use a 4.5 Ryobi RAG ($30 at Home Depot) with DeWalt cut off discs. Works great. Have tried other discs, but always go back to DeWalt.
