Couple things....first, glad nobody got hurt when it failed...it's usually not the case with winches. I'm a 4x4 enthusiast, just ask the guys here who have met me. I hope you've gotten it fixed but if not, a little advice.
Galvanized wire rope you get in bulk is not the same rope you normally use on a vehicle winch. Rope for the most part should be 1.25 times the winch rating for tensile strength if not more. On most winches that can be alot. For a trailer winch...knowing you might be pulling something with flat tires, stuck to weeds and overgrown grass....stuck in ice and snow etc...and it might weigh as much as your truck, well....don't skimp.

something like that is exactly what you should have.
Now, as far as the thimble...it is NOT meant for tensile anything...just rope retention. You need X number of windings on the drum at all times with a load...usually 6 sometimes 8. I have a hitch mounted winch for my truck (My front mount and carrier was stolen while I was at work a long time ago so I no longer have it) Also, anytime you have a load on the cable hang something (Pair of old work boots tied together, big towel...floor mat) on the cable that will keep it from whipping something...like your tailgate, or you...or your back window if it breaks. And make sure your hook and pin are rated higher than the cable and the winch...too many times I've seen someone go to tractor supply and grab a CHAIN hook not realizing it says 5,000 lbs on it not 10,000 or worse still 3600.
