offer them cash? if you think you can make money on it, buy it. lets say an old cast iron stove weighs 600 pounds.. the yard (right now, here) is paying 0.13 cents a pound, so i will times 600x0.13 or sometimes i go a few cents less... and then id offer them $40. sometimes "can i have your metal for free" wont work. and ALWAYS be polite, being an a$$ will get you no where.

Starting out, you're going to need to pay for stuff. Especially these days, when everybody knows there metal junk is worth a "fortune" - thanks to the media. I'd try offering half of scrap yard price or a little less and see what they say. If you don't have the money to put out, try seeing what you can pick up from the side of the road.
People may laugh at me, but that's ok. I laugh all the way to the bank.

When I realize I can't get my junk for free, I offer about 1/3 of what I guess it will bring scrapped. Usually effective, sometimes not.

I typically won't ask for their "scrap metal" ... I'll usually offer to "recycle" their trash. The world is in recycle mode, and people typically feel better knowing it's being recycled.
