Flat Tires

Well.... Guess this is a good as place as any to post this...


It is inevitable being in the scrap game, that you will get flat tires... especially inside the scrap yard... Is there anything you do to prevent flats? Things like put slime inside your tires or have a second set of tires that you swap onto your truck just for going inside the scrap yard?

Myself, I don't do anything....My little mazda p/u gets probably a flat a month... my 86 chev 3/4 ton 4x4, which I use to actually bring my loads to the scrap yard has (knock on wood) never had a flat....



So... I would like to hear everyone's thoughts. lol was almost wishing those no-flat bobcat tires would come in pickup sizes. hahah


Long weekend here in British Columbia.... yard is closed today, so I have 3 days of being able to strip down some of my stock pile inside my tent shed...

Flats are bad, but worse when you still have your full load. Had a tire going down on the way to the yard put in a plug in the sidewall and just made it. Unloaded 600 lbs steel and then had to put on the donut spare on my nissan to get home!

Saroro, that is ingenious !! You try it and let us know if it works...the round ones out of microwaves should be perfect.

Wouldn't it be possible to hang a magnet on the under side of the car in front of the wheels in order to "catch" the nails before they get your tire? Less punctures, possibly a little more iron for the load. lol Put them on behind the rear wheels too for backing up! lol

Nice! Prevent ruining a couple of 10 ply tires and that puppy is paid for.

Our yard has a large magnet assembly mounted on a vehicle that they drive around and pick up dropped stuff, that way we're not getting flats. Called looking out for the customers,,,

Ours does something to that effect, too, but I get into alot of other spots that are not as clean.

When I was active duty Air Force we had magnet bars across all the vehicles that road out on the flight line to pick up all the screws, misc. safety wire and all that other stuff we dropped from getting sucked into jet intakes.

They work great until you have to clean all the crap off the bars at the end of every shift.

Hah, AFSC 2A651b c-130 engine mechanic and flying crew chief. We rarely did FOD walks, usually only had to do them with the bomber guys. Or whenever we had a big shot coming around.

In the reserves at Norton AFB in San Bernadino CA (now closed ) Loaded and unloaded cargo planes...may have crossed paths with you guys back in the day. Let us not mention the years that have passed since "the day".
