I know my Chevy Astro mini van will be ideal for what I'm doing/going to do by recycling escrap and non ferrous. If I don't have time to unload all I have to do is lock the doors. Tinted windows, nobody knows what's inside. With the seats out there is 7' up to the front seats. Looks to be more room than a mini pickup. Just gotta get those darn brakes fixed. Now if I was gonna do other kinds/volumes of scrap then I would have to rethink my options.

Me personally I use a dodge dakota 3.9 v6 5 speed 2 wheel drive. Have a homemade trailer out of a popup that I pull. Or will rent the uhaul trailer if need be. I have pulled anything and everything. Last load I was peaked at 8000 lbs between truck-trailer 3 vending machines and my buddy and me. Think the vending machines was around 1800 lbs. So the bastard does pull everything. I love the looks and people tell me me I need a bigger truck. I just laugh and say I need more scrap. I made it into a hillbilly stake body. Cut squares out of the box and mounted wooden sides. I have had it stacked 14 ft high at 1500lbs tin with chain binders and straps to secure. Never lost anything and only get dirty looks from DOT.

Guess it helps I was a mech for many..many...MANY years and also a truck driver for 3 otr. Plus a hillbilly redneck lol. I know how to drive and tweak vehicles to do what I want. I should take a pic. I just bought a pre built bumper off my bud. 3 inch emt tube stacked 3 high with diamond plate on top. Was built for a f150 by the owner and then scrapped with the truck. My bud gave it to me for cylinder heads. My welder friend installed and modded it to fit the Dakota. You really should see the looks now...lol. People think twice about cutting me off at the lights and what not.

Oh and go ahead laugh./....piss ant lil v6 dakota. Best was tow dolly with 3500 thunderbird hooked it to it with no motor/trans but driveshaft still hooked to rear. Had the driveshaft tied up to spin, but got caught. The car kicked sydewayz and the Dakota kept pulling till it snapped the ujoint.. Went right up a 6% grade for 5 miles in 3rd gear at 35. :>

So long rant over, but I love my lil ole green truck. She makes me money and dont cost me nothing. 16 mpg too. :>

He worked and retired from a big junkyard but the craziest thing I ever seen him do was; they had a customer that wanted to buy the fuel tanks off a semi truck. Big old 100 gal round long pig looking things. Well the torch guy had blown a hole in the tank taking it off so Mark is out in the yard, straddling it like a horse, and brazing away on the hole. Every so ofter the tank would belch and jump about 2 feet off the ground, Mark riding it and as soon as it hit the ground he'd take right off brazing again. Everyone that worked there thought he was certifiable.

Jesus///thats is lmao. Buit i got that beat. Back in the day I used to run the junkyard scene. That is how I got my start as a mech. Anyway we had a kid run around do the little things. He was like 15 or so. I was 19. He had a simple task...go up pull the fuel tank. He wasnt allowed to burn and I had to cut a quarter off. Well about 30-45 mins I go up. I never bothered to look underneath and see if the tank was gone. I jumped in the trunk and started cutting. As soon as I hit the tank...I was blew out of the trunk. Probaly 25 ft. Couldnt see for 15 mins. Luckily no burns but took my breath away. I thought I was dead till my vision came back. ANyway, 15 mins later I get my bearings. I hop in the Omni yard car. Head down to get revenge for almost killing me although it was my mistake not to check. Anyway told the kid hey I need you for something. We hop in. I usually hammer through the yard at 55 or so. Noone cared. I start ramping up to about 75. Kid thought nothing of it. I aimed right at the tire pile. Right before I hit the pil I snapped my belt and before he can say oh ****...we went up and away lo. Gained like 50 feet and did a barrel roll. Funner than a rollercoaster. He baged around a bit got a bump on his eye. That about it.

He goes running down to the owner. I fing quit...Julian is pyscho...ran out the door like lil girl. Left his tools and all. Owner started barking at me like wtf did I do. I told him what happened and I do admit I should have checked, but we all thought he was trustworthy. Not up there smoking a bowl. Owner started laughing his arse off and told me I can keep the tools and kids paycheck if he dont come back in a week. Also take the rest of the week paid.

So I got 3 days off...500 in tools and another 350 from the kids pay...lol. I kinda feel guilty about it now 15 year later, but at least I learned my lesson. Always check somebody's else work and hopefully the kid learned his, because he almost killed me.

    Inconspicuous, just pulling your chain.

Too me your question is akin to my wife asking what should she wear. Any fool knows to dress for the weather. Now tell us what your planning on haulin so we can better advise you on the type of truck or truck trailer combo to purchase.

There's already plenty of information written towards this topic.

    Toyota Lite-Ace mini van
5 speed manual with tinted windows.
Seats removed and high roof means i can fit plenty in there.
Bought for $500 but spent about $1500 on motor recondition and registration for 12 months
Pesky U bolts straightened on me when i got off the scale at my scrap yard a few weeks back.
I had to unload and carry half a ton of ferrous about 50m in the mud.
Lucky there was a mechanic two doors down with a fork to get me out and back on the road within 24hrs!
I both love and hate my Van :>

I use a 91 nissan pickup for my small picks and a 88 f150 for my big pics and taking ferrous loads to the yard. I would like to get a trailer/car hauler but its not in the budget just yet. when i first got into scrappin i only had the nissan and would haul up to 1300lbs on it.(kinda sketchy though) at 30mpgs it was a great scouter but got tired of making two and three trips to the yard with stuff that only takes one with my ford.

    3 questions about the trailer.

Where can you buy 1 from?

    How much is it?

How much does the crane lift?

Can't go wrong with a Ram Cummins. I prefer a Cummins but like the looks of certain years of Fords.

IIRC when I came across it a year or 2 ago, I saw a list price of 30k. Not seeing a price any more.

Either my computer is messed up or their site isn't showing all the details. Under specs for grapple capacity it cuts off.

    http://www.allprotrailers.com/allpro...php?editid1=29

But I did find this page.

    http://www.trailershopper.com/page-23709.html

    Honda powered self loading Grapple
    • Over 17 feet of reach
    • 2300 lb lifting capacity at mid boom 1300 plus fully extended

Sounds like decent lift cap. The grapple appears to be different on the 2nd link. I imagine whatever type you wanted, they would get it installed for you.

If you find out how much it is, please report back.
