Mine sounds as if a lifter might be bad. I am thinking possible timing gear replacement ?

Bring your timing mark on the damper up to TDC ( top dead center ) chalk a line on the damper to correspond with a stationary mark, hook up your timing light to number 1 cylinder plug wire.
Point the light at the chalk marks you made, if the chalk marks line up each time the light strobes the chain and gears are fine, if the chalk line on the damper dances to and fro from the stationary mark your timing set should be replaced.
It's much more convenient to do this at home in a dry shop rather than a roadside repair.

Where do you find a lead score like that? The folks on the boolit casting forum (http://www.gunloads.com/castboolits/index.php) would go crazy over that. If you still have some of it you may be able to sell some there.

One of my associates has two very large slabs of lead each well over a foot thick at his farm not far from my home location. I have no interest in procuring these slabs, I envision that processing them into manageable chunks would be very labor intensive.
If any of your boolit buddies want to take on the project I would be more than happy to forward Gary's contact information for the usual finders fee.
The farm is not all that far from North Dakota on the Canadian side.

You might also keep your eye open in the junkyards for any used up racecars (street stock-late model) as they use lead behind or under the seat for left side weight, maybe even in the leftside framerail. It makes them go around the corners better after they have "been scaled" with the weight in. They'll use 200-300 lbs at a time.Where do you find a lead score like that?

I use a 94 F150 and Nissan pickup. It's very simple and quite effective. It does a good job and also I can pull about a ton at a time to the yard.

For urban and suburban trash scrapping on residential streets with parking on both sides, I want only as much truck as I need. A Ford Ranger with a short cab and long bed fits that description well enough. I would drive a smaller truck if I find a cheap one in decent condition, but that's not likely for a while as the industry moves to the big end.

i got a 4cyl beatup chevy s10 with an 8ft bed. does the trick most of the time, but i just bought a 4x8 trailer to haul ferrous and make things easier. spent all weekend building it and decking it.
i also bought a dodge ram 5.9 v8 4x4, but now that i fixed it up and got it running nicely, i think i'd rather keep using my s10, and just sell the dodge.
if you're determined, you can make it work with what you have. good luck

My '93 chevy dually gets the job done, ext cab long box..4x4 for hauling scrap out of the woods...only wish i have is that it was a diesel.

Isuzu NQR with 20,000 lb. hydraulic hoist to dump the bed and 10,000 lb. winch at the front of the bed to drag stuff up the ramp. This ain't a hobby for me.
As far as lead, check out the boat building forums - guys building their own sailboats are always looking for lead to cast their keels with or to use as internal ballast.

I do not think I have the perfect set up, although the set up I do have has done each job nicely. I use a 2000 Ford F-150 Ext Cab Long Bed and a 5 x 10 small trailer. The only thing I would really like to improve on ( at this time ) is to have a trailer that runs full size tires, maybe in the 15" range.
This little set up has pulled over 3000 lbs of heavy melt torch metal quite a few times.
But as I see it, whatever vehicle you have now, is what you should use. Though I do advise you to be VERY careful not to over load it. Getting stuck on the interstate with 2 blown tires and broken leaf springs sucks MUCH ARSE !!!

purchased a brand new 6x12 landscaping trailer for $1600 with a free spare tire...
added removable side for an extra 4 ft of height total cubic yards about 13.
also a back rack/safety rack!!!!1 a must to save your rear window from shattering....as you can see before i had the trailer how i would load my scrap..yeah i purchased that rack after that trip because my glass shattered(had to brake hard and boom...bye bye rear window... 2nd best investment i made lol)
the trailer has hauled a ton ow weight... i had about 2400 lbs of cast iron in my pickup bed alone one time... i was scrapping but man this truck is a beast... and my trailer most Ive hauled on it was about 1800 lbs dont forget the steel added about en extra 400lbs to the weight of the trailer alone... btw the trailer is a Parker and my blue truck is a 99 Silverado 1500 4x4 (170k on the clock) dailey driver handed it down to my dad... i upgraded to an 04 gmc sierra 1500 z71.( still borrow the blue one from my dad when i need to hit the yard... my sierra has not been 2 the yard since i purchased it lol..

I have an 08 F-350 single axel with a 18' car trailer with a 15k warn winch . I routinely drag cars with the wheels locked ,missing, flat ,broken axels u name it up on the sled I nick name it the "dead sled " I have been tempted to get a rollback or a wrecker BUT I keep saying where would I put everything . I have a generator ,couple baskets of hand tools sledge hammer 4 way , j hooks bridal chain ,sawzall ,leads, floor jack . Not to mention if Im on a good roll and Im scrappin 5 cars I may have 15 tires and rims in my pickup and convertors .and a handful of batteries and copper wire that I can trar out quick . Neither a rollback or a wrecker would be as good as my sled . Lately though I have been rhinking that a rack truck thats as short as possible to have a stinger installed on it might be the perfect truck . It would have a shorter turning radius , most of the weight would be on the road , I could carry a wheel dolly if tires are flat .I could hook up faster and I could lift the front of the car high enough so I could get under to cut what I need to . I wouldnt have to jack the car up at the junkyard so I could take the tire but Id have to back up behinf the car to get the rear tires off it .( depending on where I go sometimes the guy at the yard *****es unless I give him a ten spot every time I come with a car to pick it off for me ) If I got one Id want a good durable one like a jerdan or century . Usually I jack the car up and leave it on a couple of rims laying on the ground after I take the tires Any of you have this set up or seen one like it . I have a wood deck on my sled and I Id get a smooth steel one if I changed it .
