Mine's shot too. Guy on the crane at the yard was unloading a huge reach in cooler and dropped the dang thing right on my tailgate. Bowed that sucker right in the center.(I only let them unload in have to situations, otherwise I do it myself) I have to un-latch it manually now and it's a real pain. Don't know if I should just take it off and ride without one or replace it with a junkyard one. I really need a tailgate at times, but heck if I replace it the same thing'll just end up happening again.

Unfortunately the tailgate often times keeps the sides from starting to bow out.

personally I would either invest in a bad a$$ trailer with a winch, good tie downs hooks ect... Or a Roll back.medium duty Rollback will run you atleast 6-10k. I bought a 1999 international rollback DT466 w/ 190k for 12k last year. When you done with it you should be able to get most of your investment back

yes i agree a rollback would be nice but not only do they cost alot more money then u have to have commercial insurance which is more and also you attract more attention from the DOT man.
I wanted a rollback and all of that but i am going to buy a 2 car trailer that way i can haul 2 at a time and still use the dodge to do it.
if your going to stick to scrapping cars, a tow truck has a lot more yses arround the yard beyond towing. and they have dolly wheels for flat tire or wheelless vehicles just my .02
I have 2 small wreckers. The smaller one is on a 3/4 ton Chevy with singles, 6 cylinder gas & 4 speed. It is comfortable with most small time towing, but towing anything bigger than a 1/2 ton pickup or a full size car is not so comfy.
And it don't take much to fab up a rack to go on the dollies to accomodate cars with missing wheels.
Based on the picture, I would agree that $1500 is a bit steep for that unit.
For $2500, this one came with a truck with 6.9 diesel & C6
I have worked for a tow truck company and what I can say....wheel lift...100times better than anything else.
A one ton can tow just about anything but we did have some 1500 and 2500 for smaller cars and what not.
And they make wheels that will go onto the back of the car so you can tow it even if it has a flat tire....or no tire you can still tow.

They have it with a tire on it..but I did repo...people would remove all 4 tires thinking it would keep there car from being repoed...you just put these under the tires and set them up and boom...it rolls
lots of good advice in this thread. I'd also add that, at least around here, two trucks require special plates and insurance similar to a rollback.
+1 on a good trailer, winch, and pickup to tow it with. Maybe take the money you'd spend on a wrecker bed and invest in some time saving tools.
What would help you load and dump faster? Folding/hinged ramps, a smoother trailer deck, j-hooks or other types of straps, GPS unit for the truck...Save 10-20 minutes of work per load and you could squeeze in several more cars per day!
you guys are great once again, i got a really nice car hauler with a winch already plus we have a regular 16 foot utility trailer that we haul have hauled small ones on. im gonna do some more research. thanks so much for the info
I had a 16' trailer 7k it wasnt built that well and I scrapped a couple hundred cars with it and sold it it owed me nothing . I need a new trailer or something I spent the last 4 days researching used rollbacks & wreckers . They both have their pros and cons . They are easier and faster but they are a lot more expensive and break down vs a good trailer that is pretty much no maintenance in comparison . I bought a warn 15,000 winch from a guy that was going to build a mud truck and didnt . still in the box for $1000 its a beast its still in the box . Its to good to mount on my last trailer . I usually used a come a long or a hill and gravity to load cars . Used trucks all have a ton of miles on them so that worries me . I have been considering a demco folding car dolly . It has its great points Ive used them a lot . I have specked out a new 10k 16' steel deck trailer with a box on the front tounge to hold that winch and battery 6" structural channel and same toungue wrap . d rings stake pockets and side bumper rails , slliding ramps on seperate bars that are detachable . No beaver tail stright cause I like to put the front wheels on the back of the trailer and remove one ramp thats a good height to go under and cut stuff off before winching it up all the way . 5G's new with adjustable pintle ring custom built . Im undecieded what to do . I saw a old wrecker for 5 g that isnt bad but i dont want to have something that old that probably will start nickeling and diming me all the time . Everybody I know says runn from any of the ford 6. diesels . The dolly is nice that it folds up and can be put in the garage out of the weather and it galvanixed they arent cheap 3650+shipping thats at least 4 g's any advise ,suggestions ?????? I was considering a hydrolic tilt but I dont know if thats necessary with that big winch

Check this out for the heck of it i called jeer dan dealer to see about a 19' rollback they wont mount them on anything less than a f450 and they reccomend a f550 now for a f 550 2012 xlt gas & 19'rollback they wanted 60 g
About five years ago, I considered getting into the recovery business and spec'd a new f650 with 20' Jerr-Dan - $87,000. Considering that you're not getting new, there are plenty used rollbacks out there - fairly new but either really high miles (rural) or beat to death (urban and rural). If you're careful, there can be some good buys for someone who wants it for occasional use hauling junk cars/trucks. Just stick with the 650/6500 or you'll need a CDL. Make sure it's posted "not for hire" and insurance shouldn't be more than a pickup would be.
I'd still recommend a trailer, though, for scrap hauling.
the best rollback for junk cars would be just a f3-50 or f-450 rollback they are smaller easier on fuel and insurance is cheaper.Also yeah put not for hire on it but if u are using it to make income it is still considered commercial.
But none the less my sling is the best money maker out there i gurantee.
Ha Im a poor white kid from the getto (G) You are right about that 16' trailer mine was real tight . What kind of ramp set up dp you like I had the ramps that set in the groove on the rear of the trailer and Im thinking of flip up ramps or else some kind of slide ins if they are easy to get in and out . My last ones were a pain id usually just push the cars off the back without any ramps on it and just let them slam on the bumpers and ground . usually I let the operator at the dump spear them and shake off the rims for us and I usually tip him 5 bucks a car but its worth it . I am also going to get a smooth steel deck this time a spray bottle of transmission fluid makes stuff slide real easy when you need it
8 ramps ?? are yours still slide in ?? or where do you carry them. I was going to get 5' and have him make them on a split pipe with a pin so that after I had the front wheels up on the end of the trailer I could remove one ramp and do my cutting underneath easier before its all the way up on the trailer .. They were going to flip up with a bar angle holding them but they would be detachable if I needed to remove them for a truck like your talking about .
Im also trying to keep the winch cable from rubbing on the edge of the trailer and possibly wearing it out . I could just hook a chain to the car so the cable doesnt contact the edge of the trailer . Mabey that would be the best and simplest way otherwise Id have to have a section notched out and the winch itself would be higher . Know what Im talking about .
I like to keep my equipment in as good as shape as possible I hate rusty white trailer wheels . im considering aluminum rims they are 45.00 each extra . They dont rust . or mabey some of those black rims that you see on trucks . ??? I try to make things a durable with resale in mind . I have a friend that i scrap with sometimes and we are like the odd couple you could put this guy in a closed room with 4 rocks and come back 1 hour later and one of the rocks would be missing and the other three would be broken
Nice trailer . Im big on saftey I had a brand new F350 totaled once with a dump trailer on it by my father . No injuries he was wearing his seat belt . The trailer forced him off the road into a pole and the momentum of the trailer wipped the truck around 360' on the pole and slammed into the side of the truck bending the trucks frame the radiator was pushed back to the fan .I dont know if his brake controller wasnt working . or he had to much gravel behind the wheels or what, but I like well built solid trailers working properly with good hitches . check this accident on utube go there any type "Car Trailer accident poland "
I finished specking out on trailer.I went with an 18' rated for 12,000 lbs smooth steel deck smooth steel 5' ramps ,fold up on seperate bars and removable with side of trailer storage pockets for them if I want to store them away . warn M15000 winch with a battery inside a steel box on the a frame .6" channel frame w3'' cross members 12"o.c. down the length . 16" Aluminum wheels w10 ply radial tires Stake pockets with rub rail and 6 D rings on the deck,7,000# droplegjack . 4 brakes and breakaway . He sandblasts all the steel before priming it . I provided the winch he provides the installation ,steel box and battery for it . It was origionally $5,000 for the 16' 10k lb trailer but I upped it to 18' 12k rating it will propably be $5500 -$5,800 now . It will last me a long time till I get a rollback one of these days
