Tandem axle trailer with no title

So I took in a tandem axle trailer on a trade deal from a friend. It came with NO title. It's been traded several times and god only knows where the title went or who ever owned it in the first place. Looking back on it I should have never traded for it without the title. I repainted it the other day and could not find a VIN # anywhere on it. I know I should probably have the police come VIN it but i'm afraid that somewhere down the line there might have been an issue with it. Of cource I don't wanna lose out on my trade but finding NO VIN scares me. What do I do?

Here in Idaho, as long as they weigh under 2000 pounds, we just license them as homemade.

Our state law requires that they be licensed if they are over 800 lbs.

Is the trailer listed as homemade or by a manufacturer?

It looks like a Big Tex around a mid 90's model. It's not homemade

2 of my trailers came from Texas with no serial numbers so I ended up licensing them as homemade.

Here they require that you have a police officer come out and check the VIN# regardless if it's homemade. It even has a place on the application asking if it's homemade. When I call the officer out he will see it's not homemade and fill his part of the application out stating such. What the hell do I do?

The axles will have serial numbers that can be traced but that is a lot of work. Did the bill of sale have a VIN number on it that you can stamp into the frame?

NOPE! The Bill of Sale says I ******* trade one tandem axel trailer to ****** in exchange for one single axel and $200. That was about all it said

In minnesota if it does not have a vin you can licence it as a home made. You must save all recipts and take 4 pictures, one of each side.

2000 is also the magic number here in Colorado. It also must be under 30 ft. total length. A trailer over 2000# or 30 ft. can also be titled and plated as homemade here, but it must pass a DOT inspection first.....lighting, brakes, etc.

I'd go back to your DMV & inquire about the possibility of a DOT certification for registration as a hevy duty homemade. I had to do this with my bigger homemade and the total cost of getting through DOT & DMV was under $200, but it is both over 30 feet long and WAY over 2000 pounds...over 4000.

Here in CO, after the weight certification, and possible DOT certification, the DMV issues a VIN tag with the title.

Flat bed? Probably between 1500 and 1900 pounds depending on how heavy duty it was built. If I remember right, Big Tex's aren't very heavy trailers.

And take a grinder and a rattle can to any remaining stamps or stickers before inspection
That's some of the worst advice I've seen on here. I have nothing to hide nor do I want to hide the VIN if found. I just want the title so I can register and use it

Ah, appearantly I misunderstood. I had the impression you could not find a VIN on it. As far as worst advive....don't ask questions you don't want the answer to.
